Former Rivals Expected to Support Kerry (delegate info)
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 02:18 AM by JI7
<John Edwards will have more than 530 pledged delegates at the convention, a weak second to Kerry's nearly 3,000. But the North Carolina senator's intentions are clear: Edwards, now the vice presidential candidate, soon will send a letter to his delegates asking them to vote for Kerry on the first convention ballot, his spokeswoman, Kim Rubey, said Thursday.

At least 2,163 delegate votes are needed to secure the nomination.

Former Gov. Howard Dean (website - news - bio) of Vermont will meet with his 100-plus delegates on July 26, the first day of the four-day convention, to encourage them to support Kerry, Dean spokeswoman Laura Gross said.

No other candidate topped 100 delegates. Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio has at least 64 and says he will unite his supporters behind Kerry at the appropriate time.

Andrew Rivera, treasurer for Al Sharpton's suspended presidential campaign, said his office hasn't had discussions yet with Kerry staffers about Sharpton's roughly 20 delegates to the convention. >

4. Usually, in alphabetic order
What usually happens, however, is that various states will defer their votes until the candidate's home state comes up. When the happens, they traditionally let the home state's vote put the candidate over the top for the nomination.

After the nominee has enough votes, the other candidates usually call for a unanimous vote in favor of the nominee. A "friendly" convention will typically make the vote to put forth a united front.

I would imagine something similar will happen this year....during prime time, of course ;)

5. Did you notice on the same page as the linked article
There is a poll about which is the best team to lead the nation, and it lists the Democrats as Edwards - Kerry, lol. The media really does love that golden boy. I guess all that talk about Edwards outshining Kerry is true :)

Here are the choices:

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
John Edwards and John Kerry
Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo
