I'm not sure that was the case when the event was scheduled. Oh, not to say Charlie was in serious trouble, but at one time there were some folks with big money and influence within his district who were mounting an effort to unseat him.
Besides, the way I see it, Charlie Rangel symbolizes everything House Democrats (and all Democrats) ought to be. Stands up to the administration, is not afraid to speak out, involved in the whole range of issues, to include national defense and foreign policy, has the credibility of a long history of public service, both in the House and before, Korean War veteran who saw fierce combat, understands and articulates the impact of war on the poor and minorities.
Clark and Rangel are natural allies, and indeed they have been. Rangel was one of the first to endorse Clark and has been possibly his strongest advocate within the Party since.
