Money, war top voters' concerns

<snip>

About 50 miles north, in rural central Pennsylvania, some one-time Bush supporters weren't so sure about the president.

At the Grice Gun Shop in Clearfield, salesman Dudley Shimmel, 52, said he doesn't like Kerry's support for gun control, but he's leaning against the president.

"I don't believe this war is being fought for the reasons given to us. We were duped, and I'm not happy about being duped. I've been hornswoggled."

Henry Lefler, 46, a customer in the gun shop, said he voted for Bush in 2000, but he'll go for Kerry this time. Lefler, a member of the National Rifle Association, also worries about Kerry's stance on gun control, but he's more worried about the economy.

"All my buddies voted for Bush in the last election. Eighty percent are voting for Kerry this time," he said.

1. I can confirm this
My in-laws (in their 60s and 70s) live one town over from Clearfield. Very republican turf. My mother-in-law tells me everyone she knows wants Bush gone. Nobody speaks up in defense of him. They seem more uncomfortable with the gay marriage than the gun control, but they'll still vote for Kerry.

2. My mother (voted for Bush in 2000) is voting for Nader in Florida. Not as
good as voting for Kerry, but I will take it! Maybe the Nader thing will backfire on Bush yet.

3. Holy crap, that's pretty amazing stuff
I grew up in this part of the world, Pennsylbama. Very nice people, but very right wing. I keep trying to de-program my relatives, but it is tough going. The editorials in the paper are Cal Thomas, Thomas Sowell, and occasionally a George Will if they are feeling like a change of pace from far-right wing hypocrites to merely very-right wing hypocrites.

I haven't discussed politics with them in a very long time (I use an email mailing list to try to make my points), but I've noticed them being very quiet about our f-up in chief lately. Good news indeed. We need to hold PA this year.
