If we're making Lord of the Rings parallels, I'm sorry but the only character Hillary fits is Gollum. She had the taste of power once and it corrupted her. Now she's lost it and will go to any lengths to regain it, even as it eats away at her and turns her into a despicable, wretched creature. Obama, on the other hand, is Frodo. He's fighting to destroy the Ring (current politics), something that Hillary can't live without. So she'll pander to him while at the same time plotting his destruction. But, like in the book, Hillary's thirst for power will destroy her and "politics as-usual" in one fell swoop.

16. I'm convinced that many DU Hil-bashers are retread FR Hil-bashers. |
|
They will travel many long miles, visit many websites, expend much time and money and wear many disguises for a chance to vomit vitriol at Hillary. Personally, I think they're demon-possessed.

18. I thought that in 2004, and in 2006 as well. |
|
The problem is that they were still there in 2003, 2005, and 2007 too. DU is largely a conglomeration of single issue assholes, retreads from FR, and a small minority of actual progressives that have an intact central nervous system. Thus it has always been, and so it shall always be, sadly. I think that's the fate of all internet forums, frankly.

out of the wilderness in an attempt to destroy the evil ring.
Although I'm no surrogate, on Hill's behalf, I say "You're welcome".

12. I think she's more like Saruman. Or maybe Wormtongue. |

Certainly nothing like Gollum, except perhaps in the singlemindedness of obsessive pursuit for that which will forever be out of her reach, but calls to her like... well, like the One Ring calls after Gollum, I guess.

13. You don't seem to understand the characters at all then |
|
Obama is certainly not Frodo, and if he is --then we have grave problems because ultimately Frodo could not withstand his lust for the power of the ring (politics as usual)
By your own analysis then --if Hillary was Gollum --then it will be her pursuit of the Presidency that prevents Obama (Frodo) from keeping the ring and becoming a twisted wraith himself. Essentially saving Obama from "politics as usual" as opposed to Obama, himself being able to throw off it's yoke.
In fact, given the duel nature of Smeagol-Gollum, it's arguable that it was Smeagol (not Gollum) that decided to save Frodo from the ring in an act of self- sacrifice. (Likely given Tolkien's Christian background)
Will Hillary save the naive young Obama's soul from 'politics as usual' by taking the nomination from him? That's where your analogy would lead.
At any rate --I see Obama and Hillary more as Faramir, the well spoken and gentle Prince -- and Eowyn, the woman-warrior that fought battles both internal and external.
I tend to save the evil roles in LoTR for the GOP.

19. I respectfully disagree |

It's apparent by the time we reach Mount Doom that Smeagol is gone permanently. To see this as a Christian allegory would be a mistake, as Tolkien himself wrote many times that he despised allegory and never used it in his writing. The scene at the Crack of Doom does show Frodo falter, and the fact that we've seen Obama get his hands dirty recently (I wont deny it) shows how tempting the power of politics-as-usual really is. But the scene at the end is not a redemption of Gollum, rather, it is the fulfillment of a theme shown time and again throughout Tolkien's legendarium that evil will always undo itself with evil. In this case Gollum, at his most evil, undoes the even more powerful evil of the Ring. Just as Hillary, who is getting more and more desperate and corrupt before our eyes, will eventually fail, and take the evil nature of Washington politics with her.

Tolkien despised allegory and he would have similarly disagreed with your own analogy to the political race, which you seem to think is the only worthy interpretation.
People see what is in their hearts (this is true of any work of art) I'm sure Tolkien would have told you that once Middle-Earth left his pen -- it was open to all manner of interpretation and not all of it would have been either his intent --or necessarily wrong for that fact.
Tolkien also would have told you that there was no way to know what was in Gollum/Smeagol's mind at that exact moment --whether consious or not. Smeagol was a hobbit when all is said and done -- and they were made of sterner stuff. In any event it is not 'apparent' that Smeagol was gone permanently.
The phrase "oft evil will shall evil mar" does not describe all the forces in Middle-Earth either --unless it's your contention that Tolkien was saying that Good survives --only because evil is a screw up. Sorry --though it is indeed a prevalent theme in Tolkien's work --it is not the only theme. What chance brought the ring to Gollum? Was it evil's design --or was it good's?
I find your comparison of Hillary Clinton to Gollum to be a vile repugnant piece of slime, and it says far more about you then it does about Smeagol, Tolkien or even Hillary Clinton.
