Canadians on Bush: "You are all screwed"
That's what I was told over the weekend by three guys from London, Canada (East of Windsor).

They told me that we might as well be wearing targets if he gets reelected, and that they would expect our country to be in ruins if he wins.

Pretty insightful for a bunch of half-drunk 20-year-old Canadian college students.

I had some of the most interesting converstations with Canadians about politics - unlike most americans I know they aren't afraid of talking about politics.

2. Do they mean
Canada is going to join some kind of coalition of the fed-up to take down the American empire?

What exactly did they mean? We are already almost universally hated and in a sort of Israeli-like pariah-among-the-nations status.

What could possibly get worse other than economic collapse and military defeat brought on by such a coalition?

And they probably won't want to collapse our economy because theirs would collapse along with.

14. Whoa! Up here in friendly Canuckistan people have no plans
to invade the USofA nor do we want your economy to collapse. I think that what the students were saying is that Bush/Cheney's neocon ideplogy has made America much less safe and if re-elected it will be even less safe.

Almost everyone here is supporting Kerry/Edwards because we care about our neighbours who are being royally screwed by Bush. The majority of us also believe that Bush/Cheney is bringing the world to the brink of destruction. Us Canaucks don't want war, we want peace, eh.:hi:

4. Having been raised in Canada during the first 18 years of my....
...life, take it from me, Canadian alcohol can pretty much distort anyones perceptions, especially underage college students who have over-indulged. If these students go to Western, you should ask if they've raided the alcohol stores in the medical labs. Couple that with the possibility that these light-weight political pundits may have played hockey one too many times without their helmets, they miss one very important point. If the U.S. ends up in "ruins" then Canada will end up in ruins also.

Having said that, they are certainly correct that we do not want four more years of BushCo and it sure would be comforting to give congress back to the democrats.

7. Canadians
the national pasttime of Canada is talking down against the US. It's not suprising that they would choose to talk about politics when it involved taking cheap shots at the US. I have worked in Canada for 7 years and it's amazing how they focus everything they do compared to the US.

10. Love / Hate Relationship
Canadians see America's strengths and foibles. It is true that a Canadian is almost by definition, someone who has chosen not to be an American, but that doesn't mean that we 'hate' you. Over a 100,000 people showed up on Parliament Hill for our remembrance service after 9/11.

Do we like Bush? No. Do we like Bush's go it alone foreign policy? No. Am I offended that Bush hasn't so much as paid a courtesy call to Canada? Yes. I don't think that my views would be unpopular in this forum.

Many people in the world think of Canada and Canadians as Americans, only a bit more polite and reserved, and strangely obsessed with hockey. Canadians see themselves differently. It is true that we do share some commonalities. We are both New World countries with relatively short histories. We appreciate self-made people. But Canadians cling to our distinctions, not to be anti-American, but to celebrate being Canadian.

Canadians are more liberal. Canadians are more urban. Canada has embraced multi-culturalism. We value the collective good. We are not a Super-power, but a small country with a lot of real estate. Our history is one of compromise and negotiation.

8. Canada would join the EU before they'd allow us
...to drag them into the gutter.

If they didn't care, they wouldn't have kicked us out those times when we invaded them.
