GOP flier questions new voting equipment

As Gov. Bush defends touch screen machines, his party urges using absentee ballots to "Make sure your vote counts."

By STEVE BOUSQUET, Times Staff Writer

BOSTON - While Gov. Jeb Bush reassures Floridians that touch screen voting machines are reliable, the Republican Party is sending the opposite message to some voters.

The GOP urged some Miami voters to use absentee ballots because touch screens lack a paper trail and cannot "verify your vote."

That's the same argument Democrats have made but which Bush, his elections director and Republican legislators have repeatedly rejected.

"The liberal Democrats have already begun their attacks and the new electronic voting machines do not have a paper ballot to verify your vote in case of a recount," says a glossy mailer, paid for by the Republican Party of Florida and prominently featuring two pictures of President Bush. "Make sure your vote counts. Order your absentee ballot today."

The cat is out of the bag, Jeb. I urge all voters in the United States who must use these touchscreen machines to call their Supervisors of Elections and ask for an absentee ballot which, at least, leaves a paper trail.

2. is it possible the absentee ballot can be thrown out, shreaded etc.?
I mean, once sent in who is to say they even received it? Hence no vote cast or a longer peroid of time for an "offical" count! Would that longer time some how give the repukes an avenue to "fix" the vote to the way they want it?

Nothing surprises me anymore!

ballot than getting an accurate count of the results from the touchscreen machines.

The Florida Democratic party, by the way, has been urging those who must vote on these touchscreen machines, 15 counties, to call their elections supervisors and ask for an absentee ballot.

15 Counties using DRE Precinct Voting Method according to Florida's Secretary of State:

Broward, Charlotte, Collier, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Nassau, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, Sumter

Click on Certified Voting Systems Lookup and then click on counties that use DRE (touchscreen)

6. Makes Sense
Despite what many people here think, the Republican party is actually filled with people that care just as deeply about the democratic process as us. Insuring an accurate vote count is not a partisan issue--it is an issue that transcends politics.
