Why with a 40 point lead in WV and a 25 point lead in KY would
Hillary use the "hard working white people" line? If she is looking to bow out gracefully or stay in through the Convention, she doesn't need to pump up her prospective vote totals in the next few states by that type of rhetoric. I will never believe that either of the Clintons are racist. But I remember Bill's Sister Souljah moment as a clever, right on/over the line bit of racial positioning. So it does not strike me as completely impossible that one of the intentional tactics of Hillary's campaign is to exploit racial divisions in her effort to get the nomination.
As I look at this last set of comments from her, I am perplexed and saddened. I have consistently said it was her decision as to when/whether to suspend her campaign. And I have written off as RW/MSNBC bloviating that she is trying to weaken Obama's chances so that she can win in 2012 if he loses in November. I do not want to believe that she is capable of this destructive behavior. I hope that she pulls back from this type of statement, emphasizes her estimable assets and focuses her fire on McCain. That is what her life in the fight for liberal values requires. That is what the Democratic Party and the Nation need so that we can end this shameful chapter in American history.

1. She's trying to convince the SDs that Obama is unelectable because he's black.
The primaries (past or future) don't matter anymore, ignore them.

She wants the SDs to hand her the nomination because Obama is too black to be electable.

She's despicable and the Clinton name is mud.

7.  I had seen this. What troubles me is the linkage of "hard working"
with "white people". I can understand using the first phrase instead of working class but do you really think that using the whole phrase as she did was unintentional? If so will you admit that given other incidents in this campaign, she ought to be distancing herself publicly from the implications of her words.

8. It was poor phrasing, but I don't believe it was intentional race baiting. She was uhing and uhming
too much for it to have been a rehearsed phrase. I believe she was just quoting the article to the best of her recollection and the fact of the matter is that she does still have a strong base of white working class voters. And I think it's, also, clear from that other thread that she's in the habit of saying "working people" instead of "working class" probably because "working class" could be taken as a classist dig. That said, if I were her, I'd be playing up her strength with seniors and bringing the message back around to health care, her most obvious strength.

9. What I want to know is why she didn't say..
Hardworking is it because the upcoming states percentages are mostly white, and why wouldn't she just name all races in this statement aren't all americans hardworking no matter what the job? Didn't she or some of her surrogates say something concerning he is not like us on one of their campaign stops? I think it was Bill.

3. She knew she would win WV and KY, without having to resort to touting her
support among uneducated whites. She may have been trying to damage Obama against McCain--perhaps trying to stoke racial and class divisions for the FUTURE, not just for her nomination chances.

4. I don't think Clinton will clarify or apologize
for the statement any quicker than she apologized for the war vote or lying about Bosnia. She doesn't do apologies. In fact, with the Bosnia story, she said "get over it".

6. She's trying to make the case..to "force" Obama to choose her as VP
Hillary is not stupid. She wants something out of all of this. If she can claim to carry the "white" vote, women's vote, Catholic vote....she thinks he will be forced to put her on the ticket.

13. Too bad she needs 72-point leads for wins that can actually beat Obama
Edited on Fri May-09-08 04:13 PM by rocknation
40 points might excite a media that finds it profitable to keep this story going, or impress a math-challenged gullible donor. But even 35% of WV and KY would help Obama because he'd need fewer superdelegates to get to 2025.

18. digging the hole deeper
It's ashame that one gets a label for not voting black. WE all know the Clintons aren't racist. We all know it's the Obama supporters that are dividing the party. It's not a 25 point lead in KY , it's 36. WV has a 43 point lead. I use to support Obama, then I'd decided to ignore all the hoopla bloated media and to research based on voting records, quotes, and political issue stances with tenure. I switched to HIllary. I'm shocked of all this cry from Obama's side. Yes, there are nearly 1 million voters in WV and 1.65 M in KY. She will surpass his popular vote without a doubt with WV and KY. Once MI and FL become seated at the end of May. She will wipe all of the remaining votes. Clinton won SD in 1992, so why do the polls state she will not get the vote. Who knows! I'm a democrat and am disgusted in Obama supporters and their bashing of another Democrat. They are digging the hole not just for Hillary but for Obama as well. Nice work, O supporters! I will blame you and Huffpo aka Obama.com for destroying our party.
