19. John Edwards didn't help John Kerry one bit. In fact, he wound up fighting with Kerry's team. |
|
John Edwards could not deliver his own state of North Carolina.
I don't think he is a team player. The rumblings within Kerry's campaign at the end were not favorable to Mr. Edwards.
I'm glad he finally got on the bandwagon.
At least he squeezed his endorsement of Obama in before Al Gore and Jimmy Carter did. How foolish would he have looked getting on board after their endorsement?
Edwards should not be the VP choice.

47. Even as a Kerry supporter, I took the rumblings with a grain of salt |
|
Kerry and his top people never said anything negative - even as both Edwards said negative things about the Clintons.
The turning point was the comment by Edwards in the NYT November 2007 article where he bragged of not using "Help is on the way" continuing to use his slogan. That was such an act of chutzpah and egotism that I now see the rumblings as likely the tip of the iceberg. The idea that he thought he could OVERRIDE the candidate who very easily beat him said everything.
As you said - not a team player.

25. Maybe I'm just naive, but |
|
I don't automatically assume that big endorsements are made in exchange for the Veep slot. I think both Richardson and Edwards actually endorsed because they wanted to, and not just because they expected a major reward.
But then again, I respect both of these men, rather than assume they are just opportunists.

49. Also in Edwards case - the endorsement came after it was |
|
at least 99% likely that Obama was the nominee. This was not a risky endorsement - made when HRC still had a chance or was even still the favorite.
This more signals everyone putting aside differences and getting behind the presumptive nominee.

42. I'm no fan of Richardson's, as I said, but he has an impressive diplomacy resume, he has executive |
|
experience, he has strong appeal among voting demographic groups who currently prefer Hillary over Obama and so he could energize those voters, he's from a swing state in a critical region.
His statements on sexual orientation were dismaying, but his actual record on gay rights has been better than those statements would lead you to suspect.

43. I had a lot of respect for Gov. Richardson prior to primary season. |
|
I had more during primary season, and far more today.
An endorsement by John Edwards, inarguably a plus for any candidate, does not eclipse Gov. Richardson's talent and resume.
Either would make an outstanding vice president or Cabinet member and likely would be willing to serve their country by doing so if asked.
