that kid who donated his bike: ATTN mods, Skinner et al
Edited on Wed May-14-08 11:37 PM by Gore1FL
Can we raise some cash to buy him a new one?

I'm an Obama supporter since Edwards left the race. But the sacrifice this kid made for Clinton shows an amazing love of Country (even if I disagree with his choice).

Can we have a fund drive for him? Imagine the press when Democratic Underground buys him a new bike!!

2. I bet he does
I don't agree with him, and I appreciate your skepticism. But if he exists, that kid is the quintessential future of our party, and he needs a new bike.

3. Maybe he does and maybe he doesn't. But to seek the truth is unwholesome and unsettling.
It's like the "Let's Roll!" 9/11 story. Nobody's really interested in the truth, it's a good story. And everybody loves one of those, don't they?

don't think this "story" will merit such a public effort at DU, but who knows?

plus I thought this would have support rather than what it seems to have achieved so far.

9. This does not sound like a particularly good idea
Your intentions are noble, but the kid's reward comes from making the donation. To "pay him back" simply removes that reward. A related situation would be when someone makes a charitable contribution, and one does not expect to be paid back in kind for one's generosity. The payback comes in other, intangible ways.

12. I apprecciate your point
there is something to be said for regarding his patriotism with a gesture of kindness in return.

His gesture was noble, and sacrifices of this nature should be rewarded.

13. Yeah, I kind of agree.
I actually posted in another thread about doing a fundraiser for him...but after posting that I thought better of it. It's not like he's going hungry because of it - and many in America are. Plus, isn't it the act itself that counts, the political awareness at such a young age, instead of the bike/money itself?

43. I don't know about that. I think it's actually rather nice.
No, the kid didn't do it in the hope of a reward, but it's that nobility that is worth celebrating and rewarding.

10. how about asking KO to buy him a bike? Let him do the digging and if
the story isn't true, then there would be the national exposure on that, too. You know how he never let up on the Walmart story.....

14. No. The kid wished to donate his bike. Let him do so. There are far better uses of money.
I'm sure the kid would be happier if you just directly donated the cash to Hillary.

25. I am a comedy writer,so yes I have a sense of humor
but I am putting forth an idea that:

1> builds the party
2> re-enforces the good works of young Democrats
3> gives good PR to DU
4> provides a piece of unity when we desperately need some.

That is serious.

31. humor....how about trying it this way?
West Virginia had a young lad with a bike,
Who wanted Obama to "take a hike."
Thus, he sold his great wheels;
Imagine now how he feels,
So, DU, chip in and be good sportmanlike.

21. He'll have to learn to manage his money more wisely someday...
...or he'll grow up, end up going to a bar, loaning himself some money for drinks (with interest), then crash over at your friend Lenny's place. He'll stay too long, and the only way you'll be able to get him to get off the couch and leave is if you pay his loan back and give him cab fare.

34. GoreFL1....I think the problem is that people are cynical of Hillary's stories now...
and they just don't trust that the kid is destitute nor even exists as she says it. Remember when she sat in that trailer in TN (I think it was) and they told her the story about the lady dying because she didn't have health care and Hillary repeated the story and then it wasn't true. So, I think people here may question just how real this story is.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You have a heart of gold for sure.
