United Steelworkers endorse Obama
Edited on Thu May-15-08 09:42 AM by RamboLiberal
The United Steelworkers union today announced it is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president.

In a statement released this morning, the Pittsburgh-based union said:

"When the presidential primary contests began last year, our union felt strongly that because of Sen. John Edwards's deep commitment to working people and because of our shared beliefs, he deserved our strong endorsement. His belief that unfair trade policies must be changed, his commitment to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers' rights to freely choose workplace representation, and his proposal for universal health care were widely shared by our members.

"Today, by virtue of a unanimous vote of our International Executive Board, we find ourselves once again in agreement with Sen. Edwards, this time with his decision last evening to endorse Sen. Barack Obama."

The union said Mr. Obama has consistently supported workers and called for major changes in the health care system.

of any candidate would have been unrecognizable after they get through Congress.

I hope the idea of a long delay and bickering helps the public to get behind a BIG push to get HR 676 through congress (finally) after the inauguration. :D

My dad was a steelworker at one time, and he's been for Obama since the start of this.

15. Actually, I am hoping that it is a health care plan like Kucinich's
that emerges from congress after the congress critters on both sides of the aisle in both chambers take their time to write the necessary legislation.

25. Yes, it was written by Conyers and Kucinich
The plan is embodied in HR 676, the Conyers-Kucinich bill, written by Dennis Kucinich and John Conyers. HR 676 is a plan for a Universal Single-Payer, NOT-FOR-PROFIT Healthcare system.

8. I remember yesterday on the "Race to the White House",
which was really just used as a precurser to the Edwards' endorsement, David Gregory was asking everyone if it would have any impact. Ed Shultz said "Well, the United Steelworkers will go for Obama now, they have been waiting to see what Edwards would say."

Yea! Good news.

21. Yay, all 5 of them
That's not a comment on Obama or this endorsement, just a disillusioned voice at the fall of labor over the last 30 years. God I remember when the UAW, Steelworkers and OCAW actually meant something. :(

It's still a great endorsement.

27. WA Rep. Jim McDermott endorses Obama
Rep. Jim McDermott on Thursday became the fourth U.S. House member from Washington to endorse Barack Obama for president.

The Seattle Congressman told the P-I's Joel Connelly that Obama is his pick because "I am confident as president he will end the war in Iraq and bring our sons and daughters home."

McDermott has represented Seattle for 19 years and is one of the more liberal voices in the Democrats' 235-member House caucus. He is the last House member from this state to declare his support for a presidential candidate.

McDermott joins at least four other Washington "superdelegates" who have endorsed Obama in the race for the Democratic nomination: Gov. Chris Gregoire; Reps. Rick Larsen, Adam Smith and Brian Baird; and Pat Notter, a member of the Democratic National Committee.

Sen. Hillary Clinton has the support of five of the state's superdelegates, including Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, Reps. Norm Dicks and Jay Inslee, and King County Executive Ron Sims.

Obama won Washington's caucuses earlier this year.

Ex-President Bill Clinton staged a fundraiser in Seattle in the fall of 2006 to help McDermott pay legal bills from his long-standing civil litigation battle with GOP House Minority Leader John Boehner, which McDermott eventually lost. McDermott said Thursday he had repeatedly tried, without success, to reach Hillary Clinton to tell her he was endorsing Obama.

28. Sweet. They could've done this sooner and helped out here in PA
AFSCME is across the street from the USW building here in Pittsburgh and they had all these big signs up for Hillary. I used to work for them indirectly in 2006 as a community organizer so I'm happy to see they chose BHO.
