Does anybody know the etymology of the name Sebelius?
I was just wondering this after something was brought up in another thread about VPs. Kathleen Sebelius has a very cool name I think...I was just wondering what the root for Sebelius is?

1. There's a Finnish composer with that name, but it sounds more
Estonian to me. Both are Ugraic languages. So the root will be a bit more difficult to come up with. I'll see what I can find.

2. Well,
The composer, Jean Sibelius, was born to a Swedish speaking family in what is now Finland.

So, I'd guess at Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, or maybe Russian.

Sebelius and Sibelius

So, Alex Ross wonders whether Kansas Governer Kathleen Sebelius is related to composer Jean Sibelius.

I haven’t had time this week for my planned “real” post, so ok, I’ll bite. Being a bit of a genealogy nerd, I have access to some resources, and here’s the answer:

I don’t know.

But, I do know these things:

Jean Sibelius, although known as a Finnish composer, was ethnically Swedish (as many Finns are today; Finland is a bilingual Finnish/Swedish-speaking country).
Governor Sebelius’ husband Gary is the great grandson of a Christian Sebelius, who identifies Sweden as his birthplace in the 1900 Census
Gary Sebelius’ grandfather, Carl, was a dentist. No real value here, but isn’t it kind of creepy that I can find that out?
No luck figuring out where in Sweden Christian came from. But, he was a contemporary of Jean Sibelius (whose real name, interestingly, was Johan Julius Christian Sibelius). Jean Sibelius was born in Hmeenlinna, which was part of Russia at the time, not Sweden.

Still, dollars to doughnuts, they are related, if distantly. That’s my educated hunch. Regardless, I agree with Mr. Ross that it would be lovely to have a president named Sebelius.

8. Her maiden name is Gilligan
Her dad was an Ohio governor, John Gilligan.

I just dread the possibility of the GOP calling Kathleen Obama's little buddy and cartoons depicting her dressed as Gilligan.

I love my governor and I really hopes she remains my governor.

21. I don't think a lot of people know
that's why I mention it whenever I can. I guess it all depends on how popular her dad is and how much Ohioans like her.

fwiw, her husband Gary is the son of a former Kansas US Rep. Keith Sebelius, a Republican. Gary is a federal magistrate judge. http://www.cjonline.com/stories/012003/leg_mrsebelius.shtml

Too funny! Reminds me of an old comic named Norm Crosby or Cosby, I can't remember which. His schtick was to use words out of context.

16. In Scandinavia, Sir
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was fairly popular for upper-crust and aspiring types to adopt a Latinized form of a Germanic family name: 'Caselius' for 'Karlsonn', for example. Probably something like this ocurred, but what the original root might be is beyond me.
