Can you tell which way your local paper is leaning - * or Kerry? |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 12:59 PM by bigskydem
I have been emailing weekly correspondences with the editor of our local paper. He insists he has total control over the endorsement for Pres. It is part of the Lee Enterprises chain.
Based on buried stories, LTTE choices and DNC coverage, I'm betting on a *b endorsement. Which will please 55% of this Montana town.
WHich way is your paper leaning?

I live in Portland, OR, and the Oregonian, though it often has fits of rationality, seems to me to be on the verge of once again endorsing Commander Bunnypants.
Oregon ignored the Oregonian's endorsement last time and will do so again this time.
Oregon is for Kerry.
USA is for Kerry.

And even worse, is their local cable tv headline-news type channel. This morning they introducted a segment of "On the campaign trail" and then went into *'s upcoming week schedule...with ablsolutely no mention of Kerry/Edwards.
It's beyond blatant. I cannot wait for the morning of November 3rd.

It will definitely be a * endorsement, but like in Oregon, Florida is going Kerry/Edwards for sure. Even the arrogant GOP jerks here are starting to mumble about Kerry being elected.

I've had several letters to the editor published, and of course, each time, some local resident sends a scathing rebuttle to them which gets published a few days later. 13. Do some research on Lee Enterprises. |
|
I used to fight with our area newspaper all the time when they were owned by Lee. A different chain owns them now.
Lee tried to steer certain papers for candidates at one time. They also wanted a chain-wide editorial published in all their papers. I think they wanted it every two weeks.
They did not get away with a lot of the stuff they tried to do. There was too much local criticism.
I got all my info by Googling them at the time my local paper was one of theirs.
See what you can come up with. Pressure them.
I am not sure about the papers here. I stopped reading the one that I used to argue with all the time. The new editor would not publish my LTTEs any more. I sent them one once a month, per their policy. He told me he wanted to hear from "new" people!
I read a paper from a Rockford IL now. I live in a very small town with a weekly. They don't do endorsement.
Rockford is a Democratic town, but the paper is a bit conservative. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

After all Scripps-Howard editorially supported GWB in the 2000 election and let's stay the course, no matter how wrong-headed/how disastrous.

The evening paper(Albuquerque Tribune) carries For Better or Worse and is much more evenhanded about politics. They even run columns by (gasp) people like Ellen Goodman once in a blue moon.
The odd thing is that both papers are owned by the same outfit. The sad thing is that the only one that comes out on Sunday is the Journal, so it gets more exposure.
Of course, nobody around here reads any of it but the circulars and want ads.

that newspapers endorsed GOP candidate (ole what's-his name) over Gore by better than 2-1 margin maybe closer to 3-1 if memory serves. It would be interesting, though, to run another study by circulation since there are very many small rural and small city papers that have a primarily GOP readership and only one Los Angeles Times (for example). That being said our local rural paper will endorse Bush but grudgingly...he is way too left wing for them.

36. The Oregonian (Portland/entire state): |
|
I was thinking abou this today. The idiots on the editorial board (under pressure from the publisher, no doubt) endorsed Dumbass in 2000. However, it was one of the lamest, weakest endorsements I'd ever seen.
On Sundays they always print the total number of letters received for the week, how many they published, and the hot topics. Here is what it said today:
"Hot topic:The upcoming presidential election, with 325 letters. Of the total, 241 expressed support for John Kerry and/or criticism of George W. Bush. 54 gave support to Bush and/or criticism of Kerry, and 30 commented without taking sides."
Wow! Pro-Kerry letters are running almost 5-to-1 over pro-Bush letters. That tells you where the readership of the state's largest paper is.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if these numbnuts went ahead and endorsed Bush again with something like: "Although he's been a complete failure in every aspect of his presidency, George W. Bush is deserving of our vote."

FROM A TACTICAL standpoint, it makes some sense for backers of President Bush to run campaign ads questioning the military heroism of Democratic challenger John Kerry. The comfort level Americans feel with Mr. Bush as their commander in chief is currently his greatest advantage over Senator Kerry in the presidential campaign. President Bush can't afford to let Mr. Kerry succeed in his drive to use his decorated wartime service to neutralize that advantage.
Even if the claims of the anti-Kerry veterans featured in one ad are "dishonest and dishonorable," as Republican Sen. John McCain charged, they raise questions that inevitably make the challenger's job of winning voter confidence more difficult. But mud-slinging of this nature smacks of a desperation move that suggests the president fears he can't win any other way. It could also inspire a nasty backlash that spatters Mr. Bush with charges about his own Vietnam-era military service -- or lack thereof.
<snip>
But at the core of the conflict seems to be a three-decade-old grudge against the senator by veterans such as John O'Neill, one of those in the ad, because of Mr. Kerry's post-service role leading anti-war protests. And the credibility of the anti-Kerry attack was undermined Friday when The Boston Globe, which has exhaustively investigated the topic, reported that one of the key figures featured in the ad retracted the statement that supports a central allegation. Mr. Kerry's former commanding officer, George Elliot, told the Globe he made a "terrible mistake" in signing an affidavit swearing that Mr. Kerry "lied about what occurred in Vietnam" and that the senator didn't deserve a Silver Star because "he simply shot a wounded, fleeing Viet Cong in the back."
Mr. Elliot, who was not present at the scene, told the Globe, "I still don't think he shot the guy in the back," but felt under "time pressure" to sign the affidavit.
President Bush should immediately repudiate these shameful ads and urge that they be taken off the air.
If he can't win without them, perhaps he shouldn't. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/bal-ed.campaign08aug08,1,3628830.story?coll=bal-opinion-headlines

definitely Bush. When Kerry wins, neither the papers, television, or radio will recognize the results and will probably not show the election results. It took a very small number of complaints for MoveOn ads to be pulled and vanish from television and only recently have the new anti-Bush ads started appearing, and I thinks something must have happened to prevent them from pulling them again. Not only that, for the first time in my entire nearly five years in this city, I ran into some people from MoveOn in front of my public library, with petitions to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. When I tried to get into the library, I had to try to figure a way to avoid the people with the petitions, as it has always been neo-cons trying to push extremely conservative programs through petitions. On the way out I was alone, and cornered this time, but when I saw MoveOn had provided the petition froms for these people I almost peed in my pants with relief. Things are changing a bit here, but not enough to get the republican owned media here to support Kerry, or even for the newspaper to print and assert that the latest swift boat stuff is absolutely the truth. My city had the largest number of democratic votes not counted.

...Which means that Bush could be BBQing puppies on live TV, and they'd have the front page decicated to Bush's "brave culinary vision", the editorial section would have at least two editorials praising Bush's "way of controling the excess canine population", the Letters to the Editor section would be at least 55% BBQed puppy, and the food section would have the recipe for the BBQ sauce.

Biggest hunk of crap this side of the Mason Dixie Line. The columnists they have there, for the most part, have their head up their arse. It has become so wingnut that I stopped taking it years ago.
On the other hand, the Ft. Worth Star Telegram is at the very least neutral with leftist tendencies. Regular columnists include Molly Ivins.

58. Local papers are Greensburg Trib & Valley News Dispatch |

Both of these are owned by Richard Mellon Scaife (main source of harassment in Teresa Heinz Kerry's life and Bill Clinton's). I cancelled my subscriptions. I refuse to give my money to Scaife. I now get the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. That one is Pro-Kerry. Yeah!

The Appleton (WI) Post Crescent had an editorial a few months ago saying that they were getting too many anti-Bush letters and they wanted some pro-Bush letters to even it out!

61. The Journal - Eastern WV |

Contrary to other places I've lived, this section of West Virginia has many sort of small, city-based local papers. The Journal is the closest thing to wide distribution (for those not opting for The Washington Post), but they don't cover much national politics. The latest accident on I-81 gets top billing, and anything Iraq/Kerry/Bush usually lands a small blurb on page 6.
That said, they run pro-Bush editorials about five times as frequently as they run anything pro-Kerry. And the pro-Bush articles are always straightforward defenses of Bush, while the Kerry articles merely use the Democratic platform/campaign as part of a discussion of some kind of local issue.
They went Bush in 2000, and they'll probably do it again in 2004, if they bother to run an endorsement at all.

GOP all the way. They endorsed George Ryan in 2002, if I remember correctly.
Ditto for the Sun-Times, but since the Sun-Times is crap, it's not so bad.

Texas based Belo owned and operated, but they are in the very blue state of RI; hence, they're pussies and won't commit either way.

..is BUSH all the way!
It's rather pathetic, really. The editorial staff spends each day complaining about how "corrupt" the Liberal government in Canada is, yet give unwavering support to the Bush Regime. It's uncanny.
Proof that "corruption" only matters when its the other side holding power..
