Obama to go to the Reservation for a Rally in South-Eastern Montana
This is an historical event. I don't believe that a winning candidate for either major party has ever visited a reservation on the road to the nomination.

This will be a very big deal through-out Indian Country, from New Mexico to Minnesota.

How his staff arranges these events is just amazing.

So much thoughtfulness goes into every thing they do.

This is right up there in the top ten ~ finally someone is recognizing THE FIRST AMERICANS on their land ~ Guess who is coming to dinner....

I hope he takes his family, what a historic occasion for all of them and for us.

It better be all over the TV on Prime Time!:bounce:

20. And our Native Americans have
endorsed Obama all over the place:)

"Native American Super Delegate Announces Endorsement for Barack Obama"

CHICAGO IL
by Louis Gray, Chief Political Correspondent 5/5/2008

Kalyn Free, an at-large member of the Democratic National Committee, today announced that she supports Illinois Senator Barack Obama for the party's presidential nomination. As a DNC member, Free will serve as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention. Free is also founder and President of INDN's List, an organization dedicated to recruiting and training American Indian candidates. This brings the total number of superdelegates to endorse Barack Obama to 258. Senator Obama is 276 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination. Free said she was excited to see two qualified candidates emerge from the field of Democratic contenders.
"Today, I am casting my support for a new kind of leadership and a new possibility of what America can be. Barack Obama is a once-in-a-generation kind of leader and the best hope the American people have to rebuild the erosion our collective foundation has endured the last eight years. In 2008, we must elect a President who will restore our faith in the possibilities of each and every American, including the First Americans.

"As a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, I am proud of what it means to be an American Indian. I am proud Barack Obama is committed to our unique issues and willing to tackle our toughest problems, from historical inequities and injustices to contemporary issues, like protection of our right to tribal self-determination, access to health care for our elders, and education for our children. Despite the threats that have faced our culture and our people, hope has lifted Indian people through the most difficult times. Because we remain connected to our past, our culture and our communities, we never gave up that hope.

"Native American Times endorses Barack Obama"

Awhile back I chastised all the Democratic candidates other than Bill Richardson, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel for ignoring the Native American vote, a vote that can be critical in the West and even has proven critical in states like Pennsylvania, where efforts by Native American groups helped flip the State legislature from Repub to Dem.

Seems Barack Obama has done a lot to make up for past neglect. The Native American Times, impressed with outreach from his campaign, has endorsed Barack Obama for President:

US Senator Barack Obama is the choice of the Native American Times to become the next president of the United States. This choice made before the all important super Tuesday election to get as many Native Americans to the polls as possible to push Obama to victory. This is not an anti-Hillary vote but a decision based on what is best for Native Americans...

Obama has started to aggressively reach out to Native Americans in word and deed. In his words he has put together a policy which truly addresses Native problems. In his deeds he has actually gone to Indian reservations to seek our votes. He is also the co-sponsor of the all important Indian Health Care Improvement Act. And he continues to seek the Native vote...

Native American Times Endorses Barak Obama

"US Senator Barack Obama is the choice of the Native American Times to become the next president of the United States. This choice made before the all important super Tuesday election to get as many Native Americans to the polls as possible to push Obama to victory. This is not an anti-Hillary vote but a decision based on what is best for Native Americans.

Alaska will be caucusing; Colorado with the Ute Nation and large Native urban populations will have a primary; the Nez Perce will be voting in the all Democratic caucuses; The Kickapoo, and Prairie Band Potawatomi will be voting in the Kansas Caucuses; The Dakota and Ojibwa people will be voting in Minnesota’s Primaries; Republican Crows, Northern Cheyenne, Blackfeet, Cree and others will be voting in Montana’s caucuses; the Pueblos, Navajos, and Apaches will be voting in New Mexico Primaries; the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and other tribes will voting in New York’s primaries; In North Dakota the three Affiliated tribes, Devil’s Lake Sioux, Standing Rock Sioux and Turtle Mountain Chippewa will be voting in their caucuses; Oklahoma with their over 300,000 Indians and over 30 federally recognized tribes will be heading to the polls for their primary; in Utah the Navajo, Ute’s, Shoshone, Paiutes and Goshute tribes will vote in their primaries. Over 1 million Indians will be voting on Super Tuesday and they can have a deciding say in who is the next president of the United States. And one man seems to know and care about that fact.

And he continues to seek the Native vote."

27. Samuel Kohn - Young Dartmouth-educated member of the Crow Tribe to lead Obama campaign in Montana...
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http://www.indianz.com/News/2008/008292.asp&h=365&w=220&sz=17&hl=en&start=8&um=1&tbnid=D5a-oWN9PAbvTM:&tbnh=121&tbnw=73&prev=/images%3Fq%3DObama%2BNative%2BAmerican%2B%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1B3GGGL_enUS240US241%26sa%3DN

A Dartmouth-educated member of the Crow Tribe has been hired to lead Sen. Barack Obama's Native American outreach efforts in Montana.

Samuel Kohn, who spoke up two years ago when a student newspaper at his college published a racially insensitive cartoon, will serve as state Native American coordinator for the campaign, said Keith Harper, a Native policy adviser for Obama.

.................

Way to go Samuel! There is so much young energy in this campaign! It is wonderful to see it!!!

28. Very cool!
One correction though, it isn't the first. Both Obama and Clinton visited a reservation in March.

http://www.reznetnews.org/article/wyoming-caucus/indian-vote:-when-candidates-come-calling

I also wouldn't be surprised if McCain has, but I can't find any articles about him doing so. But I first became aware of him as a senator because of his work on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Obama's going to have a run for his money for Native American support. McCain was widely considered a friend to Indians while he chaired that committee.
