PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sen. Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now.

The campaign, citing figures from Duane Bray, battalion chief of Portland Fire & Rescue, estimated that 75,000 people are watching him speak.

The scene suggests this is not an exaggeration. The sea of heads stretches for half a mile along the grassy embankment, while others watch from kayaks and power boats bobbing on the Willamette River. More hug the rails of the steel bridge that stretches across the water and crowds are even watching from jetties on the opposite shore

I have only 50k+ in my town. To draw such a crowd is just a precursor for the general election. I would love to see one giant Obama fest where is could hold 150k+ people. Have great music, great speeches, and just all around raise morale and spirits for the Democratic sweep in November. Pull out some leading Senators and Representatives, some music, some party leaders. Lots of fun.

But, beside the point, it is just great to see such crowds with such enthusiasm. Really shows the hope he has inspired. YES WE CAN!!!

When Bush was here in 06 to help Jim Talent raise money in his (failed) campaign for Senate, Talent sent a bunch of young college kids to infiltrate our protest site. Funny thing was, they stuck out like sore thumbs because they were all wearing dress up clothing. The girls had on dresses and heels and the boys were wearing ties. And we were in t-shirts and shorts.

When Bush's motorcade was about a block away, the Talent kids had managed to get to the front of the roped off free speech zone and they all rushed the tape the cops had put up and were yelling "BREAK THE BARRICADE!"

After Bush had gone, as they walked away, the Talent kids walked right by me and they were talking about where to go to pick up their checks and how much they were going to be. I even asked them "So you won't get all dressed up and come see your president unless you are paid to do it?"
