That was Bobby Kennedy, of course, who still matters. (If you don't know why, you owe it to yourself to find out.) I was pleasantly surprised to see his face on the cover of Vanity Fair.

We're getting another chance this year, after 40 years in the wilderness. One of the very few things I feel sure about is that RFK would have been absolutely delighted by what's happening. He once said this: "But suppose God is black? What if we go to Heaven and we, all our lives, have treated the Negro as an inferior, and God is there, and we look up, and He is not white?"

You just know Bobby would be loving all this.

yet all the paintings and illustrations you see of him in Southern churches portray him as a white, long-haired hippie. Ah, I wish the preachers in some of these churches had been taught geography and ethnicity a bit better. It has created so much subtle, and not so subtle racism, based on ignorance of those subjects.

I wasn't trying to stir up an argument about whether God is black or if He/She even exists. The point of the excerpted portion is Bobby Kennedy's appeal to those who considered African Americans inferior, not some theoretical on the nature of God. Bobby Kennedy's name has been popping up in a lot of posts lately, so I thought it would be appropriate to post this.
