Clinton Financiers Attempted To BRIBE Superdelegates!
Edited on Mon May-19-08 03:00 PM by BlooInBloo
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/19/superdelegates-turned-dow_n_102450.html

One of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top financial supporters offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America during a phone conversation in which he also pressed for the organization's two uncommitted superdelegates to endorse the New York Democrat, a high-ranking official with YDA told The Huffington Post.

Haim Saban, the billionaire entertainment magnate and longtime Clinton supporter, denied the allegation. But four independent sources said that just before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Saban called YDA President David Hardt and offered what was perceived as a lucrative proposal: $1 million would be made available for the group if Hardt and the organization's other uncommitted superdelegate backed Clinton.
...
Members of the Young Democrats agonized about the potential fallout of Saban's call; his financial offer represented one-third of the group's 2008 budget. Democratic officials and fundraisers were consulted about how to respond, and at times the discussions were "emotional," one participant said. "It is scary for them, Haim is very powerful, he has great influence over donors who give to them."

What fucking sleaze.

EDIT: And kids no less. Added further quote.

EDITEDIT: AmericaBlog apparently knew of it last week, and was also waiting for confirmation: http://www.americablog.com/2008/05/huff-post-superdelegates-allegedy.html

Bribing kids. Don't anyone EVER say "they've gone as low as they can go" ever again. They'll prove you wrong.

84. How many times have we heard Bullshit like this, only to find out it is false?
Every other day, or so, for months.

Smears often consist of ad hominem attacks in the form of unverifiable rumors and are often distortions, half-truths, or even outright lies; smear campaigns are often propagated by gossip spreading. Even when the facts behind a smear are shown to lack proper foundation, the tactic is often effective because the target's reputation is tarnished before the truth is known.

Smear tactics differ from normal discourse or debate in that they do not bear upon the issues or arguments in question. A smear is a simple attempt to malign a group or an individual and to attempt to undermine their credibility.

91. I hope so because
if this is true, then the question will be how many other offers are out there, and how many takers are out there?

I sometimes forget that there are many people working in the background that have little if any conscience so long as they get what they want.

Whoever controls the money have our fate in their hands, so it seems. So much for democracy, eh? They just don't know what to make of the powerful grass-root money machine of ordinary, everyday citizens that Dean and Obama and the 50-state strategy has built - finally we have our own PAC! Sad that Americans have to have their own PAC because our advocates ignore us the moment the vote is in. Then they get all chummy drinking beer and eat in diners for a few months before they put us back on the 'ignore' list - UNLESS, of course, we have a million dollars to grab their attention.

The more I learn the more ill I get.

100. Saban discusses Hilllary when interviewed by Haaretz in 2006...
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/798437.html

(snip)

Where does your closeness with Bill Clinton come from? There are donations and interests, obviously. But maybe you have a connection that comes from both of you being born on the wrong side of the tracks and making it with a combination of cunning and personal charm?

"I don't know. I know how it began. I began as a regular donor. A friend asked if I wanted to have breakfast in the White House. I said fine. And when I sat there, every time Clinton's eyes met mine something started spinning in my gut. One thing led to another. Afterward, the whole family was invited to the White House. In the 2004 elections we watched the results together. Should I tell you that I don't pinch myself? I'm sitting here, he's sitting there, Hillary is there. Chelsea and her boyfriend are on another couch. And she keeps getting up to bring me Diet Coke and San Pellegrino bottled water. And both of us have our feet up and are watching the results in state after state until three in the morning. Yes, I pinch myself."

Is there the same closeness with Hillary, or is it a guy thing?

"It's not just a guy thing, but with her it's more professional. He's more open, she's more cautious. She protects herself. Hillary is more of a lady."

Could she be president?

"In my view she is ten times more qualified than any other candidate."

Do you really believe that, or is that your friendship talking?

"What friendship? This is the presidency of the United States. Do you think I would support you if you were running?"

And is America capable of electing a liberal woman?

"Yes. And she's not all that liberal, either. When it comes to security, she has taken a very centrist position."

Will she be good for Israel?

"I think so. Look, President Bush is very one-sidedly pro-Israel. But look at the results of his policy. They were not beneficial for Israel. We are in a major mess. Look at the facts on the ground. Bush is a massive failure. Hillary will be more balanced than Bush. She will try to create credibility among the Arabs in order to mediate between them and us. We will get nowhere with them in direct negotiations. Only with billions, with pressure."

Will President Hillary Clinton be capable of making tough decisions on Iran?

"Her policy will be different. She believes, and I agree, that it's a mistake to conduct negotiations through the European envoys. As I told you about Hamas, we have to talk with everyone, including Ahmadinejad. Hillary Clinton intends to engage with Iran in order to try to find a political solution that will ensure a non-nuclear Iran."

And if she can't reach a political solution?

"I don't think she knows, and I certainly don't know, and even if I knew I wouldn't tell you, with all due respect."

Do you still feel, as you once did, that America's attitude toward Israel is liable to deteriorate?

"At the moment there is no sign of a crisis. But we must not be complacent. The two pillars of the state are the Israel Defense Forces and the U.S., Dimona and Washington. We must do all we can to maintain the alliance with America. A major crisis at the wrong time could be a disaster, a disaster."

Do you feel that as an Israeli-American of influence your mission is to prevent that crisis?

"You said it."

Do the Jews have a future in America?

"Yes, certainly. It's a strong community, Hillel is active on college campuses. But there is also assimilation. Take me. Even though my wife is not Jewish, I did not assimilate. But my son will not have the same affinity for Israel that I have. I would like to see him in uniform. I think it is the duty of every Jew to serve in the IDF. He wanted to enlist in the past, but he's not talking about that anymore."

Are you sure your son will live as a Jew in the long term?

"Look, I don't believe in religious coercion. That's why I never told my wife to convert. But when we were married I told her there would be no children. What do you mean, no children? Exactly that: no children. You believe in Jesus Christ - he came once and will come again. I don't care if he has come or has already gone. That's not my problem. But one thing I do know. In my soul, my spirit, my blood and my mind I am a Jew. It is unacceptable to me for my children not to be Jews in every respect. She told me: So it will be. I told her that this is my line in the sand. Every night before eating we say the motzi, the blessing over bread. And kiddush over the wine on Shabbat. And Bar Mitzvah, the whole thing. When my mother-in-law tells my son that he is half-Christian and half-Jewish, he answers her, 'I am not only Jewish, I am Israeli.'"

Will the children inherit everything? Will they continue the Saban empire?

"A certain amount goes to the four children, but it's not as if when I pass on and my wife passes on they'll just get a pile of money. No way, there are very strict conditions. They have to be independent, productive citizens. But the great majority of the money will not go to them. It will go back to where it came from, society."

Israeli society or American society?

"Half and half."

Everything you did, everything you built will go back to society?

"Precisely."

Amazing.

"Why? If I knew where I was going and I that the money would help me there, I wouldn't give it to anyone, I would take it all with me. But I expect to become dust, so what would I do with all that?"

Then it's all a game, the entire $2.8 billion you have accumulated is a game.

"Don't believe everything you read in Forbes."

Was the Forbes estimate high, or low?

"I leave it for you to guess. But look, the money is only a marker. It tells you whether you succeeded or not. At the level we are talking about, beyond that it has no value. Therefore everything will be sold. This house, too. And the other homes. Everything. Before I go on to my next adventure I will return the money to the society that gave it to me."

And the money for Israel - where will it go?

"Mainly to combat units, that is the most important thing: Housing for lone combat soldiers, free education for combat soldiers, things like that. These are guys who don't volunteer for Sayeret Matkal or for the Paratroops just because they want to jump out of a plane. Look, they are Jews, I am a Jew. And when they blacken their faces and enter Bint Jbail and I'm in Beverly Hills - who owes whom? They're in Bint Jbail and I'm in my chateau. Where is the justice, where is the balance? It's because of them that I am alive."

Haim Saban, I have been listening to you for hours and I still don't get it: What's your thing? Where is your place, really?

"It's very simple, habibi. I am in the West but my heart is in the East."

27. Let's hear again how Obama is the corporate donor's choice...but truly...
This is fairly rough politics to do on an organization dominated by college-age kids. Now they have to spend the next few years in fear that their refusal to take the bribe has doomed their future donations. While not illegal, this is very shabby politics.

While Hillary Clinton battles Barack Obama on the campaign trail, a judge in Los Angeles is quietly preparing to set a trial date in a $17 million fraud suit that aims to expose an alleged culture of widespread corruption by the Clintons and the Democratic Party.

45. Remember the letter from Saban and others to Pelosi
In March 2008, Saban was among a group of major Jewish donors to sign a letter to Democratic Party house leader Nancy Pelosi warning her to "keep out of the Democratic presidential primaries."<11> The donors, who "were strong supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton presidential campaign", "were incensed by a March 16 interview in which Pelosi said that party 'superdelegates' should heed the will of the majority in selecting a candidate."<11> The letter to Pelosi stated the donors "have been strong supporters of the DCCC" and implied, according to The Jewish Telegraphic Agency<11>, that Pelosi could lose their financial support in important upcoming congressional elections.

51. Interesting...

Saban relates that his political opinions regarding Israel and its foreign relations have shifted significant to the right<1>:

"I used to be a real leftist. I remember Arik Sharon <the leader of Israel's right-wing Likud Party> coming here, to my house, a few months before Camp David, when he was still leader of the opposition. He told me there would be no deal because Arafat would not sign. I told myself that there was nothing to be done -- these right-wingers were simply insane. I had no doubt that there would be a deal and the problems would be resolved. History proved that Sharon was right and I was wrong. In matters relating to security, that moved me to the right. Very far to the right."
How far right?
"When there is a terrorist attack, I am <Avigdor> Lieberman. Sometimes to the right of Lieberman.
For two days I really love Lieberman. But afterward I come back to reality. Look, I don't see a solution today."<1>

...

In May 2007, Haim publicly declared his support for Hillary Clinton in 2008 presidential election.<6>

Matthew Yglesias has related Saban's support of Hillary Clinton 2008 presidential campaign to Saban's earlier 2001-2002-era donations to the then Iraq war-supporting DNC saying that "if Clinton becomes president, they'll be back in the positions of influence they enjoyed back then. I doubt this all means that Hillary Clinton's secretly itching for war with Iran, but it's yet another illustration of the fact that her views on national security policy are too neoconnish for my tastes."

113. Saban is working with Freedoms Watch to push the US into war with Iran
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:35 AM by leveymg
Haim's working the Democratic side of the isle, while Sembler, Templeton, and the others have a lock on a big money 501(c)(4) group, Freedoms Watch", fueling "independent" GOP media buys. Consider this:

1) From Laura Rozen's column: "Sonnenmark believes that the group's strategists were probably not encouraged by the results of the focus group she took part in. "I got the general feeling that George Bush didn't have a shot in hell" of winning public support for an Iran attack. Some members of her group suggested that should Hillary Clinton be elected president she might have more domestic credibility to make such a controversial decision. "

2) This, of course , is what billionaire Haim Saban told Haaretz almost a year ago:

(Haaretz) Will she (Hillary) be good for Israel?

(Haim Saban)
"I think so. Look, President Bush is very one-sidedly pro-Israel. But look at the results of his policy. They were not beneficial for Israel. We are in a major mess. Look at the facts on the ground. Bush is a massive failure. Hillary will be more balanced than Bush. She will try to create credibility among the Arabs in order to mediate between them and us. We will get nowhere with them in direct negotiations. Only with billions, with pressure."

(Haaretz)
Will President Hillary Clinton be capable of making tough decisions on Iran?

(Saban)
"Her policy will be different. She believes, and I agree, that it's a mistake to conduct negotiations through the European envoys. As I told you about Hamas, we have to talk with everyone, including Ahmadinejad. Hillary Clinton intends to engage with Iran in order to try to find a political solution that will ensure a non-nuclear Iran."

(Haaretz)
And if she can't reach a political solution?

(Saban)
"I don't think she knows, and I certainly don't know, and even if I knew I wouldn't tell you, with all due respect."

119. The Quartet's plan died in 2002.
As far as their tilt toward Israel is concerned, don't forget that along with the U.S., Britain and Russia helped create Israel. What are they supposed to do now?

As for the prospect of the U.S. "falling forward' into Iran. Not going to happen so long as the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in charge of the U.S. military.

The next four to eight years will see a period of realignment, regrouping, and reassessment of existing relationships in the Middle East, but, I think, relatively little bloodshed.

Clinton campaign on ropes

BY JOHN GUERRIERO

Murray, who has supported Bill and Hillary Clinton since 1991, said these are tough times for people like him who are in the Clinton camp but want to unify the party.

"The sense is, absent some catastrophic event that would take place in this campaign,
it's going to be very difficult to see a path to victory for Hillary given what happened" Tuesday, Murray said.

Analysis: Could Clinton land the VP nomination?

Several Clinton associates say there is still a ray of hope among some in her campaign: that a "catastrophic" revelation about Obama might make it possible for her to win the presidential nomination.
But barring that, Hillary and Bill Clinton recognize that her candidacy is being abandoned and rejected by superdelegates whom she once expected to win over and that, even if she were to win the popular vote in combined primary states, she will almost certainly be denied the nomination.

CBSNews.com Reports: N.Y. Senator Now Faces Nearly Impossible Odds To Capturing Democratic Nomination
May 7, 2008

Clinton's Path To Victory Slipping Away
There is one scenario which does work for Clinton and that’s a massive movement of superdelegates leaving Obama and supporting her. The party leaders could do that, but it would take some unforeseen development in the race between now and the convention for them to do so. Obama, in some way, would have to be rendered so unelectable that the party rejects him at the convention. That’s not much to hang a hat on but it’s starting to look like her best option.

And even that might not be a viable option, said Joe Trippi. “Even if the catastrophic thing existed or happened, if she were perceived to have caused it, I think it would end her campaign too,” Trippi said. I don’t think there’s any way now for her to gain the nomination. She’s at the point now where if she tries to make a case against Obama, it will actually speed up superdelegates joining his cause just to shut the campaign down.”

But Trippi notes that the Obama campaign and Democratic leaders are still likely to give Clinton the room she needs to go forward on her own terms, provided that she does so in a positive manner. “I think there’s lots of tolerance for her going on, running the table into the convention and having a presence there,” he said. “But if she actually tries to compete in the trenches for the nomination in a way that looks like it’s damaging the nominee … I don’t think there will be any tolerance for that at all.”

81. Haim Saban = member of the AIPAC "Israel First, America Second" crowd.
Figures that this jerk with his deep AIPAC connections would be backing Hillary. Any American politican willing to be bellicose for Israel would be tops for this scumbag.

Here's some interesting reading on Hillary's friend and (apparent) bagman...his tentacles and name pop up EVERYWHERE in connection with AIPAC:

10/4/2006 Analysis
Israel Lobby Initiates Hispanic Strategy

The Israel lobby has recently begun strategizing how to influence the Hispanic vote in the United States. Already a $760 billion powerhouse consumer market, the Hispanic share of US voters will reach 8.6% in 2006 according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Hispanics accounted for 50% of the US population growth between 2000 and 2004 but only 10% of the increase in the total votes cast. In the event of amnesty or other citizenship initiatives for undocumented immigrants, this segment of voters will become even more significant as population gains translate into voting power. Understanding and influencing the Hispanic vote will soon attract additional resources from many special interest groups. The Israel lobby clearly sees Hispanic voters as a new and largely untapped force in American politics in need of leadership harnessed to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's (AIPAC) foreign policy issue framework.

AIPAC, the tip of the Israel lobby spear in Washington, began an executive search for a Deputy Director for Hispanic Outreach (PDF) in August of 2006. Reporting directly to AIPAC's "National Outreach Director" in Washington, the responsibility of the new deputy director will be to "develop relationships with key members of the Hispanic community and encourage their involvement in political advocacy in support of the US-Israel relationship."

Why AIPAC Took Over Brookings
by Grant F. Smith / November 21st, 2007

The following is an excerpt from Foreign Agents: The American Israel Public Affairs Committee From the 1963 Fulbright Hearings to the 2005 Espionage Scandal

Martin Indyk, an Australian and naturalized US citizen, is the former deputy director of research at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Indyk helped establish the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP) in 1984 with the support of AIPAC board member and activist Barbi Weinberg. Weinberg “had for over a decade privately wrestled with the idea of creating a foreign policy center.”1 After the establishment of WINEP, Indyk stated that he was still dissatisfied and wished to establish an institution capable of escaping AIPAC’s reputation as a “strongly biased organization.”1 Indyk would later go on to found the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. The center was initially funded by a $13 million grant from Israeli dual citizen and television magnate Haim Saban,2 famously quoted by the New York Times as saying, “I’m a one-issue guy and my issue is Israel.”3 He also funded and established the Saban Institute for the Study of the American Political System within the University of Tel Aviv.4

92. how is this not illegal?
This appears to be election fraud (or at least extortion), plain and simple.

94. This thread makes it abundantly clear
why Republicans, including Rove, want Hillary to get the nomination. They win with either McCain or Clinton and are presumably safe from prosecution.

97. Damn. I posted this earlier with hardly any responses .. oh well.
Maybe cuz I was raising the question of the "legality" of it, not the patently immoral and sleezy nature of it.

98. Reminds me of that one commercial a couple years ago
Where a bunch of people are in a business meeting and one guy suggests using FedEx (I think it was FedEx) and another guy says the exact same thing, but with a hand movement.

115. Right, I'd take the money and still support Obama then ask Obama to support donations to the group..
...after ratting on Hillary's clan.

We better count our blessings this is coming out now in regards to Hillary's character, we don't need another morally bankrupt person or a person surrounded by the same in office

124. FYI, not "kids." Young Ds. means either under 30 or 35, I forgot which.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 11:46 AM by Deep13
You make it sound like some millionaire was extorting an eight-year-old. Typical Rovesque distortion from an O. surrogate.

Do we even know if this is true?

Anyway it isn't "bribery" if the donation was not contingent on acceptance. If they were getting the money either way, it was merely a persuasive argument.

And this guy is not Hillary.

127. Whereas the Obama campaign only makes "contributions."
Look it up. See how much money he's "donated" to the super delegate campaign chests. It's a lot more than the Clinton campaign.
