Miles to get much more than 30 percent. His campaign really petered out according to my contacts in the state.

7. Oh, I don't know a THING about this race
I just couldn't see declaring victory with only 4% of the precincts reporting.

I'm no where near Colorado.

Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 09:03 PM by Rowdyboy
I hope Salazar wins. He's my choice, too. And I'm very sure he would not appreciate one of his supporters insulting his
opposition. Salazar is not about dividing or insulting Democrats.

We can celebrate a primary victory without demeaning our opposition, unless our intent is to disrupt.

5. Miles is a nice guy
I think its too bad he ran for Senate in his first try. He would have been a great candidate for State Senate. I hope his people stay active. They are mostly good meaning people.

And Miles definitely is a nice guy. He's one of those people that others are instantly attracted to upon meeting him. He's so sincere.

6. Who would be stronger in the general Miles or Salazer?
Am I correct in thinking from what I've heard that Salazar is more of a centrist? Will Miles endorse him and give the Dems unity going into the general? Can they beat Coors?

9. Salazar by a long shot
Miles has not raised any money at all. Salazar is one of two Democrat statewide elected officials. Salazar has a great shot at winning. His brother John is likely to be elected to Congress in District 3.

8. I heard he was a pretty good guy. Hate to see the gloating.
http://erik-cornelius-dscc.fromtheroots.org/comments/2004/6/24/162930/182/1

Here is a quote I found on him.
SNIP..."Mike Miles defeated AG Ken Salazar at the state Democratic Party assembly. That happened on May 22, in Pueblo. Miles received 52% of the delegates versus Salazar's 48%."

I heard the DCCC preferred Salazar and threw their weight behind him. Why was that?

10. because
Miles didn't raise any money at all the Salazar has proven he can win statewide elections in Colorado. In fact, for a while he was the only statewide Democratic elected official.

11. Maybe he did not raise much money because the DCCC went with Salazar.
Things like that have happened before, where a candidate has more popular support than another, and the party picks the other to support.

Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 09:36 PM by DaveinMD
But he's been in the race a year and raise only about 100,000 to that point. You need over 4 million to win a Senate race. Salazar is a very good AG and has proven his ability to win votes.

16. You've got it, MF! As a matter of fact, Miles wasn't even
listed on the national web site as a candidate.

The party pretty much aligned behind Salazar once they learned that Campbell wouldn't be running again.

A lot of people here and in D.C. felt that we owed Salazar because he saved us from a horrible redistricting fiasco, and he did. We would have been sunk without him. But Miles' credentials are unbelievable. I hope he runs for office again.

I'll be happy voting for Salazar, but your take on the situation is correct. That's politics...

But he wasn't going to win. He had been in the race a year and hadn't raised more than 100,000. He just wasn't viable.

12. Yep, unity is assured and Mike Miles kicks ass!
I've heard both of them in person and voted for Mike Miles but will work for Ken Salazar. They will have no trouble unifying behind the winner, and Mike Miles will run again and win big someday (topple Bill Owens in 2006?). He is impressive indeed. Salazar is more centrist, but the Repugs (Coors and Shaffer) are both RW assholes of the worst sort who would be terrible drags on the Kerry presidency. Salazar will win this one, has a huge war chest, and wins elections here by appealing to good people of whatever party. He also successfully fought off a recent Repug redistricting attempt, as the AG of Colorado.

20. I can't believe the beer baron is running.
And I was hoping that Shaffer would win the Repub primary--he's way out there and would be much easier to beat.

But if we're to have a beer baron running for U.S. Senate, couldn't it at least be a baron of good beer? Coors is awful stuff.

22. No doubt! It will be hilarious.
The nice thing about Colorado is that it has so many unaffiliated voters. It's not the right-wing state many people make it out to be (politicians like Musgrave and Tancredo notwithstanding).

And we're in big economic trouble right now. Jobs are very hard to find, and our tax structure is fried.

23. Your Atvar is Wellstone, Yet You Celebrate Miles Defeat - Why?
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 11:12 PM by otohara
Mike Miles is more like Wellstone, Salazar on the other hand supported war, supported Lieberman, is for school vouchers and a host of other things that are more anti-Wellstone.

I just love it when someone starts a hotbed thread and then bolts.

39. Miles deserves alot of credit
Had Nighthorse-Campbell stayed in the race, he probably would have been the candidate because it appeared that other "leading" or well-known candidates like Salazar and Udall were not willing to go up against the incumbent. But Miles was willing to. He had guts and a strongly progressive platform and wasn't shy about it. I respect that.
