Clinton Soaks Up Warmth in Puerto Rico

With controversy still swirling around her following her remarks about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, campaigning Sunday in Puerto Rico ahead of a primary there on June 1, did what people on the Caribbean island have traditionally done in times of trial. She went first to church, and then headed off to the beach.

Mrs. Clinton’s choice of a place of worship Sunday morning surprised some Puerto Ricans, and has been discussed on local radio. On an island that is predominantly Roman Catholic, she ended up going to the Pavilion of Victory, an evangelical church in Hormigueros, in the southwest corner of the island.

Among those Protestant strivers, who had been worked into a state of enthusiasm by an hour of singing and dancing to rock and salsa-flavored hymns before her arrival, Mrs. Clinton obviously felt at home. She talked, in English and mostly without translation, not only of her political program, but also of her faith, and in terms that seemed to refer to her uphill struggle and recent difficulties.

She urged the congregation, for example, not to be “deterred by the setbacks that often fall into every life” and also said: “Do not fear to go forward, do not give up.”

“There isn’t anything we can’t do together if we seek God’s blessing and if we stay committed and are not deterred by the setbacks that often fall in every life.”

6. I caught a video report on TV and decided to post.
She looked very happy at church and the most at peace I have seen her all year.

28. Those are great pics.
Thanks. I especially like the first one. She's really a very attractive and photogenic lady. I can see why the Big Dog fell for her!

I do think, though, that the wear of the campaign is beginning to show in her face, especially in that last pic. That's not intended as a slight; I could never do what she's done, and I imagine if I tried I would look pretty shitty soon. She's held up very well.

14. I don't know that she does.
Sleep at night, that is.

She seemed very conflicted and somber early on in the church service and later, her spirits seemed to be lifted.

She is a human being. I think even she is capable of feeling conviction and remorse.

30. I think Tatiana was trying to have a postive thread here
along the lines of bigtree's posts. Does she still do those? I admit, I said a few choice words to myself when I saw this thread, but I refrained. Maybe we should just ignore these threads?

Her stylist needs to be ... replaced by someone better (sorry for the clunky wording but I suddenly realised that the usual terms for changing the employment status of a person refered to the unfortunate comment of yesterday)

Her stylist should be given the sack!

/edit to put in an acceptable term

27. C'mon, she wouldn't be Hillary without a power-collared pantsuit.
I think it is her attempt to project an image of strength.

Contrast that with Cindy McCain's suits, which I believe she wears in an attempt to project warmth.

I thought Hillary looked great at the beach. She obviously had a good and refreshing time.

schmata

noun - unfashionable piece of clothing; something you should not be caught dead wearing.

29. Clinton Modifies Trademark Pantsuit for Puerto Rico Beach Visit
From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

BOQUERON, P.R. -- Hillary Clinton visited a small beach town this sunny afternoon where she was greeted by hundreds of unsuspecting beachgoers who fought their way through security in hopes of getting a picture or a handshake from the former First Lady.

Was she wearing a bathing suit you ask? Not quite, but she did ditch the turquoise pantsuit she wore to church this morning in favor of an island-chic, pink floral tunic with white pants.

Flip-flops you ask? Nope. Clinton trudged through the sand in pricey white leather, Salvatore Ferragamo open-back shoes, or slides, as one female collegue noted.

As Clinton marched along the beach, Puerto Rican drummers banged away, making a hole for Clinton to navigate through the masses, as though she were parading the streets of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival.

When asked by a reporter what she thought of the welcome Clinton said, holding her arms open, “This is pretty great, isn’t it?”

Soon after posing for pictures, hugging and kissing supporters, "Island Hillary" boarded her motorcade en route her next stop. It is unclear whether she will change back into her pantsuit.
