GOP sees Obama mired in base
http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080526/NATION/469428595/-1/RSS_NATION_POLITICS

Sen. Barack Obama is close to clinching the Democratic presidential nomination, but he faces trouble on several fronts in the general election with blue-collar workers and other parts of the electorate who question his lack of experience, foreign-policy judgment and social liberalism.

Fewer than a few dozen delegate votes away from making history as the first black to win the nomination of a major party, the freshman senator is also showing signs of weakness among white voters in Midwestern and Southern battleground states, including Ohio and Florida, which Democrats must carry if they are to win the White House.

A senior Republican official in Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign said the party's internal polls show Mr. Obama is having trouble reaching outside of his base of blacks, young adults and college-educated voters.

"We're seeing that in state after state Obama has trouble drawing beyond his own base. His coalition has been secular liberals, young people and blacks. That's proven to be enough in the Democratic primaries, but he's going to have to go beyond that to win the general election," said Frank Donatelli, the McCain campaign's chief liaison at the Republican National Committee.

"He's done poorly in the last two months in every contest he's run outside of those areas. He's clearly not the candidate he was in February and March when he won a dozen primaries in a row," said Mr. Donatelli, who was President Reagan's White House political director.

The results of matchups between the two prospective nominees in a Quinnipiac University poll in several swing states were similar to the RNC's internal poll findings, he said.

If the media had done their job and vetted Obama before March, he'd be back in the Senate by now working on an actual resume. Instead they told the American people fairy tales about Obama's record up until that point. By the time the American people got to know the real Obama, it was too late. His base now only consists of latte liberals, blacks and young people. His base is McGovern-esque. That is not a winning electoral coalition. He'll lose Ohio due to his problems in Appalachia. He'll lose Florida because he disenfranchised millions of voters in that state. He stands no chance in other big states like Virginia and North Carolina. He won't win any Southern states. Instead of expanding our electoral map due to the sorry shape of the GOP, Obama is contracting it. He is our worst general election candidate since Dukakis, and he may even give McGovern a run for his money. Another 4 years of GOP rule is going to be hard to take.

7. So how does this compare to McCain's supposed base?
He only ran in a couple of contested primaries and I don't think he ever polled over 50% when he had competition. The repub primaries were mostly white & male and small in comparison to the Dems.

That's what the partisan breakdown IS in a lot of places right now.
Pollsters go by how people identify themselves. A lot more people i.d. as Democrat than Republican these days. It's about 45% to 35% nationwide right now.

Edited on Tue May-27-08 12:01 AM by Douglas Carpenter
"Rasmussen Reports believes the race is over and that Barack Obama will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. We will stop tracking the Democratic race in the near future to focus exclusively on the Obama-McCain match-up."

"The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator shows Democrats leading in states with 200 Electoral Votes while the GOP has the advantage in states with 189. When “leaners” are included, the Democrats enjoy a 260-240 Electoral College lead. Rasmussen Markets data gives Democrats a 63.0% chance of winning the White House in November (results are updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants). "

But I really can't believe that there is a substantial portion of Dems who would refuse to vote for him. Only in the dreams of the republican media.

38. Then they aren't Democrats- or even democrats
I'm not an Obama fan, as most Obama supporters on this site would gladly tell you. But I believe that, at the end of the day and after the long general election campaign, Dems will unite behind our nominee. Regardless of who that nominee is. President McCain and an invasion of Iran requires it.

Our party has forced us to do that too many times in recent years. Time to stand up and take the party back, make it win elections instead of losing them, even if it takes until 2012 to get it done.

90. Yep
We fought hard for women's rights, secure futures and to elect good Dems who bring peace and prosperity. If you all feel like throwing that away, go ahead. You'll find its not as easy to accomplish as you think. But the only way you seem willing to learn is to lose it and regain it on your own.

That's your choice, not mine.

113. We?
You seem to think that only Hillary supporters fought for those things. I campaigned for McGovern in 1972, marched against the War in Central America and against Reagan's nuclear buildup in the 1980's, and even supported the Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996. I believe there are plenty of those on the Obama side of things who have fought the good fight.

The evidence of GOP Malfeasance is OVERWHELMING.....the GOP/McSame's one last hope is to kill off Hillary(almost accomplished) and run a neg campaign on Obama....

Neg Campaigns and the GOP go together...thats all they do....

Might work this time too...so they wish....

I suspect, this time, they will FAIL.

The Masses are hurting mostly due to the GOP and their pet Prez...the HURT is such that a solution is desired/demanded....that solution is to remove the cause of the HURT...which is the GOP.

The Greedy GOP Gatta go....

The Dems must vote in MASSIVE Numbers...enough to make it steal proof.

Always best to go to the moonie source.

The first glaring mistake here is the notion that Barack's base is among more mature caucasians limited to "secular liberals". Absolutely none of the exit polling indicates this. If Barack's base was as limited as they or you say it is, he would already be back in the Senate.

The holes in your argument are fairly glaring as well. I know the Hillbots love to stereotype Obama supporter as blacks and latte liberals, but there just aren't enough of them to win a nomination.

I am no latte liberal. I would bet I was off working for progressive causes when you were voting for Reagan, given you were of age.

Here is the reason why your side lost. You actually thought that elections are won on resume's. If that was the case, we would be talking about replacing President Gore. John Kerry had a "great resume'", it did not help.

Hillary said "consider it as a hiring decision". Well, I hire people all the time, and guess what, the resume is a nearly pointless exercise. In fact, I no longer take them. Performance at the interview is all that truly matters. I can teach the relevant job skills, but I cannot easily teach character and judgement. The interview is an assessment of character and judgement.

Here is another concept to bang about in your befuddled Hillbot head. Presidents are hired to deal with things that no one has ever dealt with before. There is no relevant experience applicable to this job. What relevant experience is there for dealing with the Soviet Government failing and still in possession of 10,000 nuclear weapons that are pointed in our direction? There simply is none. What relevant experience is there for cleaning up the mess GWB will leave behind? (And don't tell me about the mess GHWB left behind, as it pales by comparison)

All you have to go on is character and judgement. Hillary voted for IWR, a clear demonstration of sorry judgement, and when it actually mattered. She answered the 3am phone call, rather poorly. The interview has concluded and your candidate came up lacking.

Vermont and Oregon have significant latte liberal populations and Mississippi and North Carolina have significant black populations.

Blacks and latte liberals: that is his base right now. That is not a base that wins an election.

Dejected perhaps? Because Queen Hillary, Her Royal Clintonness, holder of the sacred Chalice of Fail is kicking a dead horse's dessicated bones?

Oh, you sad, pathetic Hillarites...

Try not to commit seppuku when the, um, INEVITABLE comes to pass. Perhaps the bunch of you can form a support group, though I hesitate to imagine the drooling, foaming-at-the-mouth, and gnashing of teeth that would undoubtedly ensue.

"How to kick Hillary without even trying", or something to that end. That's what you need.

Shit, you'd make millions just off of certain ardent fellow Hillarites. The ones of whom I speak are in dire need of some therapy, post-haste.
