On June 1st, Puerto Ricans will demonstrate the correct way to do a political protest....
The president of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), Ruben Berrios, called upon all PR independents to participate in a demonstration against the presidential primary on June 1. The protest will take place in Old San Juan.

In a press conference at party headquarters in Hato Rey, were former political prisoners Lolita Lebron, Rafael Cancel Miranda, as well as leaders Jose Enrique Ayoroa Santaliz, Luis Abreu Elias, Luis Nieves Falcon, Jose Milton Soltero, Rosa Meneses and Eduardo Villanueva.

Berrios said that the demonstration will have an international impact with the heavy international coverage on the island for election day. It will also serve as a message prior to holding hearings on the UN Decolonization Committee on June 9.

"We reject any attempt to perpetuate colonialism in Puerto Rico through deception and subterfuge, denying our country the inalienable right to independence," said Berrios.

2. exactly
Puerto Rico has become the 28 year old college graduate that still lives in his parent's basement because he can't figure out what to do with his life.

4. The problem is, some folks there want US statehood, others want independence

and some others like the current situation just fine. (they get US citizenship without paying US taxes) So it looks like the people of PR can't seem to come together on what they want.

5. I just think it's nice that they're very involved in politics. Independence is not going to happen,
and neither will statehood until a lot of things get resolved, but there's a lot of room for improvement between those choices. I'm really excited to see Old San Juan be the stage for a discussion of their status, and it is only by chance that it's happening this way at all.

Should be fun to watch!
