Obama Team has 3 dozen SDs banked (Marc Abinder)
Edited on Tue May-27-08 01:31 PM by berni_mccoy
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/05/obama_campaign_banks_superdele.php

Neither the Clinton nor the Obama campaign is clear what the DNC's rules and bylaws committee will do on May 31; depending upon how or whether they re-allocate delegates, Obama could wind up within to 20 to 30 votes of the nomination -- a situation rectifiable by a piddling performance in Puerto RIco, South Dakota and Montana -- or more than 100 delegates short, requiring solid performances in those states plus a few dozen superdelegate endorsements to put him over the top.

To prepare for that eventuality, the Obama campaign has, for the first time, really, begun to bank delegates. Sources close to the campaign estimate that as many as three dozen Democratic superdelegates have privately pledged to announce their support for Obama on June 4 or 5. The campaign is determined that Obama not end the first week in June without securing the support of delegates numbering 2026 -- or 2210, as the case may be.

1. Wake me when it happens...
I'd like to believe this is true, and maybe the campaign is being very cautious in rolling out names, but this "avalanche" of SD's story has been floating around in one form or another since Super Tuesday.

6. The rules seem clear so all
we can hope for is not to have some Orwellian crap come down and after the June Primary we'll see what the SuperDels are doing.

Funny how time goes so slowly when you're waiting for something important to happen.

7. What's the sense in "banking" them?
Is it for the "shock and awe" value when finally announcing them?

11. breaking 2025 looks much better when it coincides with winning in a state than when some...
politician comes out and says "I'll back him"

13. If he released them all, Hillary will just change her goalposts, especially with FL and MI
Wait until after the R&BC meeting and release them later.

16. I see. Kind of like a poker game where the child you're playing with keeps changing the rules.
If you just keep showing your cards, the child says: "Nuh-uh! My Jack of Spades beats your flush! It's how I always play." This way, Obama forces the "goalposts" to be known by all when he once again scores.

9. you are correct, but they endorse beforehand and let people know
who they are planning on voting for. And even tho that may change, tis true, so far the only flipping has been from Clinton to Obama.

18. Obama picks up more delegates.

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
NBC NEWS has updated the delegate counts in Alaska and Colorado, giving Obama one more and Clinton one less in each state. In Alaska, Obama picks up a split of 10-3 (instead of 9-4 after he got the two statewide PLEOs at convention). In Colorado, Obama gets a split of 36-19 (instead of 35-20). Obama's pledged delegate lead is now upped to 149, his superdelegate lead moves to 34, and his overall lead stands at a combined 195 (including the 12 Edwards delegates).

Obama, today, has also picked up another superdelegate, Wyoming Democratic Party Vice Chairwoman Nancy Drummond. "My husband was a Marine during Vietnam -- he was one of many vets that has VA Benefits," Drummond said in a statement released by the campaign. "The men and women in the military and their families are giving the ultimate sacrifice now and I support Senator Obama's plan to honor their service by improving their healthcare, taking care of issues related to combat duty and caring for our homeless vets."

She adds, "We have two incredible candidates... . At both our caucuses and our State Convention, the majority said they want Senator Obama to be our Candidate to run for President. So with that being said, while I certainly respect and admire Senator Clinton's tenacity, I have proudly decided to endorse Senator Barack Obama."

17. Thats What I'm Guessing
I'm waiting until after June 4th in hopes that enough SD's will put him way over the top.
If she doesn't withdraw after they announce, then we'll know what her plans/motives really are.

19. OR SD
There is a rumor out in OR that we'll get a bunch of superdelegates declaring (esp. chair Meredith Wood Smith) soon. Some of them have said publicly that they have decided but are waiting for what I don't know

22. What if he got to 2026 before the May 31 meeting?
Wouldn't that just shut the process down and make Florida and Michigan delegates a moot point? I suppose Hillary would whine some more about that, but could she file a lawsuit about it? Because you know she would.
