Does anybody know which military Obama's uncle fought for?
Edited on Tue May-27-08 03:20 PM by 2rth2pwr
Obama seems to have rewritten WWII history such that the allies liberated Auschwitz. (On Memorial Day!)

Here is the shocking video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV1sxq8mqvA&eurl

...Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz... http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/05/26/politics/fromtheroad/entry4127479.shtml

Referring to an uncle who had been one of the first U.S. troops into Auschwitz, the concentration camp, Obama said: "The story in the family is he came home and just went up in the attic." http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/05/26/obama_speaks_with_deep_humilit.html

Auschwitz of course is in Poland. It was liberated by the Red Army (Russian) on Jan 27 1945. Poland, on most maps is usually placed to the east of Germany.

The Allies were wrapping up the battle of the bulge in late January of 1945 -- the Rhine crossings were still well into the future when Auschwitz was liberated. The

first, the Remagen railway bridge which was discovered intact, was crossed on March 7 1945.

--
And by the way, which Uncle? Obama's mom was an only child and his dad was Kenyan. Maybe he was referring to one of his mother's uncles?; presumably his grandfather

and grandmother had brothers of service age during WWII? And presumably the uncle in question was involved in the liberation of some other prison camp?

Now, more than ever, we need Hillary.

Editing to add link to where this story came from- as you can see, he uses "sees dead people" that I used first- I was seeing who else thought of the same theme, obviously many people saw the connection. While reading I saw ANOTHER gaffe by Obama, there you go.

Sad, but there are a LOT of people who don't know the names of any of the death camps besides Auschwitz-Birkenau and thus it's the first one that comes to mind when the topic comes up.

I have no doubt that his uncle was part of Patton's Army, just that the guy's nephew is getting the particulars confused.

5. I really think that this falls under more of misunderstood family legend
He says that his uncle was one of the first American troops to have "entered" Auschwitz. Then it gets muddled with "liberated". Obviously the difference is that liberating is the actual ousting of the original occupying force and entering can be done any time after liberation. I believe that this was a confusion of the two instead of a deliberate attempt to mislead us.

31. you just walked into it
why don't you learn that you can't win with trying to be ironic or funny

it is more important to have historical knowledge of presidential primary politics

Hillary wrong on 1968 and 1992 campaign

MARK SHIELDS: I think it was, at the best, totally reckless. I mean, her history is absolutely faulty. Robert Kennedy's first primary, Ray, was in May 7th of 1968. He was murdered four weeks later. She's talking about a long campaign.

This campaign began the first week in January. She's still talking about June. So, I mean, it's faulty there.

And then her explanation afterwards was just unbelievable. She said, Senator Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, had been on my mind. And, therefore, I was thinking in these terms.

I mean, it's absolutely bizarre. And I just -- I really do think it was a reckless statement and one for which she should be held accountable.

77. Or more likely it was another camp.

A lot of people use "Auschwitz" as a synonym for "NAZI concentration camp".

I imagine his great-uncle helped liberate Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, Flossenbürg, Dachau, or Mauthausen. Family members probably forgot which, if they ever knew, and just tossed out Auschwitz as the most recognizable name.

220. I agree
I have two great uncles, still alive, who both served in WWII; for years I thought great uncle "A" was at Pearl Harbor, but then it turned out to be the great uncle "B"... I think... I KNOW that great uncle "B" was there, but I'm still not clear where "A" served, he may have been at Pearl Harbor as well, or (what makes the most sense), both served at Pearl Harbor, and "B" was actually there for the attack whereas "A" was stationed there later.

it's hard to keep the exact detail of family mythology straight. it's best to write everything down so the facts are certain if you want them, but for the purposes like this speech, it's not the exact details that mattered, it's the message and the emotion that the story carries.

191. That literally depents on the meaning of literally--literally.
Clyde and Judith (a.k.a. the Literally Duo)

Clyde (Michael McDonald) and Judith (Nicole Sullivan) are a married couple without children who often attend youth events such as little league baseball games. They provide sarcastic and bitter commentary and often end their sentences with the word literally. (At a school play, Judith comments on the costume designs, claiming she "has not seen so many overly-made up fat kids since The Facts of Life went to Paris--literally"). Clyde makes comments such as, "That parking lot was so busy it was seeing more traffic than Mariah Carey's vagina--literally."

What is so hard to understand. We had a common enemy, so we united. Once WWII ended in Europe the USA took the USSR as a rival into consideration. The USA having to show the USSR its power helped lead to the decision to drop an A bomb on Japan. This shows that they were our ally, but only to fight a common enemy. The USSR on the other hand lost millions of soldiers so when they did not leave eastern Europe the USA was not about to do anything fearing the USSR would just be willing to lose millions more. In the end the USSR was a key ally to help defeat the Nazi's. The cold war did not start until after VE day.

I never said they fought under the same command. Japan and Germany were allies too but they had different command. Italy and Germany were allies but had different command until Italy fucked up in north Africa and the Nazis had to come bail them out. The USA and the USSR signed a mutual aid pact in 1942.

But the OP showed up with a link to the story, and several unattributed lines copied and pasted from some blog, "Purple Headed Member" or some such thing, complete with a semi-literate historical error, and tried to pass them off as his own words.

He got caught, then tried to deny the ruse for awhile before finally editing the OP.

1) He didn't say his uncle was one of the ones who LIBERATED Auschwitz, he said he was among the first US troops at Auschwitz. So, presumably, the Russians liberated it and he, along with other US forces, came later.

2) It's OBVIOUSLY a great-uncle. An uncle wouldn't even have been in the age range to fight in WWII. I don't know about you, but in my family, we don't call our great-uncles "Great-Uncle"... we call them "Uncle".

You want to pick apart family stories of brave service to our country? You want to try desperately to catch him in a lie? Have at it. It's a waste of your time and it makes you look PATHETIC.

But hey, if you want to have a "Battle of the Liars" contest between him and Hillary, I'm ready to roll if you are.

157. My best shot at transcribing from YouTube video
"I had a (sic) uncle who was one of the (ummm), who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz, and liberate the concentration camps. And the story in our family was...is that when he came home he just went up into the attic, and he didn't leave the house for six months...alright. Now, obviously, something had, had really affected him deeply, but at that time there just weren't the kinds of facilities to help somebody work throught that kind of pain."

A little difficult to pick out someo of the words, but this is pretty close to what he said.

I note that the story appears to have been used not to build up his own credentials, but to argue that the country owes veterans better health care upon their return.

I had a first uncle who lived during WWI.

I have a niece who is just a few months younger than me.

Families get all spread out. It is not implausible that Obama could have a first uncle who is a WWII vet.

155. my grandfather walked into a camp after it was liberated
3 days after it was liberated. From what he told me he was doing logistics for the people who were taking care of the dead bodies. He showed me pictures of the bodies in heaps that one of the guys in his division was taking (he said the guy with the camera passed out duplicate photos to the guys in his division (I think it was "division" but maybe a different word). Fucked up shit was seen in those pictures. Enough to give my grad dad nightmares. He said that after you saw that you really knew why you were fighting. He was somewhere in Belgium, France, or Germany during the war but I forget what camp the photos came from. He gave me a knife with a swastika on it that he stole off of a Nazi officer he killed but I am afraid that it will be confiscated if I try to bring it to France as our shitty anti-free speech laws against racism make anything with a swastika illegal here in France, even if it is something our grandfather got off of killing a nazi. If I really wanted to push it I would bring it at the same time as my copy of Mein Kamph (I majored in history at the university and did a research paper on the cult of personality of Hitler, I am not a fan of his).

Why should he use a personal family 'legend'(his word) in a purely political speech honoring those who gave their all in that war. Self aggrandizing.

Edited on Tue May-27-08 05:26 PM by maui9002
"legend" was not a word that Senator Obama used, at least not in the YouTube video; rather, it was a word used by the reporter in the CBS article linked in the OP. Here's my transcription of what Obama said, which may have some minor errors, but I think it's pretty close.

In addition, to be fair, the comment did not appear to me to be self aggrandizing; instead, it was used to buttress his support for the GI Bill, which Hillary Clinton also strongly supports.

207. I think that's what bothers me, too, the self-aggrandizing.
As if the heroism or service of his family members would, by osmosis, become part of his own character. It doesn't work that way.

From his anti-Iraq war speech:

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Barack_Obama's_Iraq_Speech

It isn't the first time he's invoked Auschwitz specifically. That speech he gave in 2002 was written and well-prepared.

Did his grandfather hear "the stories of fellow troops" from his uncle? Why didn't Obama mention his grandfather in his Memorial Day speech? For that matter, why didn't he mention his uncle in his anti-war speech?

And personally, I might add I've had three great aunts, all of whom I've merely called "Aunt" instead of "Great Aunt," so it doesn't seem strange that he would call either of his great uncles, "Uncle."

http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/05/21/obama-s-wwii-connection.aspx

This will make for a fascinating political and cultural moment:

To underline his own family's military pedigree, Obama plans a trip in coming weeks to the Punchbowl National Cemetery in Hawaii, where his grandfather, who served in World War II, is buried.

P.S. I hadn't known Obama's great-grandfather was named Ralph Waldo Emerson (Dunham). That seems fitting, although apparently Mr. Dunham didn't much care for the name.

117. I think it's just dead horse beating at this point.
Many Obama supporters feel she should quit, but instead the negatives continue. Her clumsy claim about June is proof that reality doesn't matter, basically because back in '68 the Cali primary wasn't until June and the process didn't start until March. This year it is much different and hanging on is hurting the party.

She can only steal it at the convention by going negative. She's been negative too long now and it is hurting the Dem chances by dividing the party.

Obama's World War II history

Earlier, the Republican National Committee pounced on Obama's improbable statement that an uncle had served in the unit that liberated Auschwitz.

In fact, campaign spokesman Bill Burton says, his great uncle was a member of the 89th Infantry Division that liberated the Ohrduf camp, part of Buchenwald and according to the Holocaust Museum, the first concentration camp liberated by U.S. troops.

The soldier in question, Burton said, is Obama's grandmother's brother, who's still alive.

... Obama's uncle actually liberated Auschwitz (or some other camp)... it's instructive to read that some of the RW sources cited here seem to be unaware that the Russians were part of the "allies".

168. What's the point here?
And WTF does it have to do with needing Hillary to do anything but go away? He, or his family in relating it to him, mistook one place for another. So what? Obama wasn't there. My stepfather served with the Green Berets in Nam and I've mentioned that to people who doubted me, tried to quiz me about what units he was with and where he served. How the hell would I know? He was there, not me, and most vets I've personally known aren't big on personally relating war stories. They tend toward being pretty quiet about it so I can see how a more common name would have got confused with the real one when related second or third hand.

Should he have checked? Probably, but again, so what? It's hardly up there with confusing flowers from a little girl with sniper fire and that done first hand with you rather than related second hand or worse. All this accomplishes is to further feed a divide we'll need to get over if we plan to do something that is actually useful such as beating McCain.

Edited on Tue May-27-08 05:12 PM by Asgaya Dihi
Not big on lists myself, nor messiahs. Not big on dirty politics either though and one side has been more prone to that than the other here. If some can't understand that it's not just where you want to go but also how you plan to get us there I don't know what else to tell them, but that in itself moved my vote and I'd imagine others as well.

It ain't useful to assume about the other side and tell them who they are or what they think though. The repubs did that for years and look how it worked for them. They were almost always wrong, others almost always knew it, and they almost always made themselves look like an ass for it and lost support. It's a poor tactic for any side, you can frame who your opponent is and what they stand for to a point but past that it's counterproductive and personally I'd hope the point it is productive to keeps getting smaller and more irrelevant until it finally goes away and leaves us discussing something like issues for a change.

Is this really where you are at right now? I mean how much anger could you possibly have to dis the tortured the imprisoned, and those who rescued them (only to live with the untreated trauma of doing so).

Or is it hate, and not anger? Do you know, or do you simply lash out to avoid thinking about it? That just makes it darker.

After all, HRC didn't mean it when she said RFK was assassinated in June. She meant that he won a primary in June. The ugly implication of her historical reference was purely accidental.

Oh, wait. You're applying a completely different standard to your candidate than to Obama. I see how it works now. OK.

229. Here's a lady who lost 7 family members at Dachau...
http://www.americablog.com/2008/05/letter-to-editor-difference-between.html

Want to know how idiotic this is? The difference between Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau and Bergen-Belsen comes down to the fact that Auschwitz was specifically labeled an extermination camp, whereas the latter three are "merely" concentration camps where people were worked to death. One of the biggest myths surrounding the Holocaust is that every concentration camp was an extermination camp with crematoria. In fact, most were work camps where people were either worked to death, starved to death, shot, or murdered in ways so unthinkable that I cannot even imagine.

Anne Frank died at Bergen-Belsen, and 7 of my family members died at Dachau. I personally don't give a damn that Obama confused Buchenwald and Auschwitz, I'm personally glad that Obama's uncle, and his American/European/and yes, Soviet allies got there and put an end to it before the Nazi's (and their "appeasers") were able to kill, by cyanide or bullet to the head, one more innocent person.

Turning this into a political football is reprehensible, and as the daughter and granddaughter of Jews who currently reside in Florida, I can tell you that this jockeying is sickening to watch. And from the limited sample I have, it isn't doing the RNC any favors (I don't know if its hurting them, but it sure as hell isn't helping).

You guys are seriously evil ghouls.

250. It was probably hard to get the story from his uncle
as he chose to lock himself in the attic and not talk about it because of the treatment that was unavailable.

I met a Holocaust survivor. Saw the tatoo. But it was not something she discussed. I don't know where she was held, but I know she suffered.

AS the generations have passed, the younger ones in the family (who could approach about it) had no idea where she was held. It was a part of her life she wanted buried.

Blaming Obama about an insignificant error in the family stories he was told does not make the story, or the point of his uncles lack of treatment any less significant.
