Lanny Davis: Four things the Obama campaign Couldn't resist doing to anger Clinton supporters
Ok, I'm an Obama supporter. And I really can't stand Lanny Davis, but I occasionally enjoy his spin in sort of a funny way. But this is not a man on top of his game. DU Clinton supporters could have done a much more believable job with an article like this! The specific examples he gives are just so weak, especially since Lanny Davis, weeks after the Rev. Wright scandal died down, took it upon himself to write an Op Ed about Rev Wright in the Wall Street Journal because he was "concerned". Seriously, this article almost makes me feel like Lanny Davis is working for the Obama campaign and is deliberately trying to sabotage the Clinton campaign, these talking points of his are so pathetic.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lanny-davis/four-things-the-obama-cam_b_103756.html

The follow are four things that the Obama campaign couldn't resist doing to anger Clinton supporters, supporters that Sen. Obama needs in the general election if -- if -- he is the nominee.

1. Couldn't resist waiting one day after Sen. Clinton won West Virginia by 41 points to announce John Edwards endorsement.

2. Couldn't resist waiting to win majority of ALL delegates (not just pledged delegates) to do victory lap speech in Iowa the night Hillary won Kentucky by 36 points.

3. Couldn't resist waiting to win majority of all delegates to announce Jim Johnson as VP search committee head -- the first candidate in my memory ever to do so while his chief opponent is still fighting for nomination -- and winning in last primary in crucial border state by 36 points (Kentucky).

What's the rush?

Obama wouldn't confirm or deny the that Mr. Johnson has been appointed to head the VP search effort. That makes many Clinton supporters feel uneasy about Senator Obama.

4. Couldn't resist listing Bill Richardson as under consideration for Veep - the one Red Flag name that infuriates even moderate Clinton supporters the most -- not because he chose to endorse Sen. Obama, but the way he did it, i.e., his inability to avoid making negative comments about Sen. Clinton while doing so -- another person who sometimes can't resist the temptation of not being gracious when he should be, a great disappointment to many of his former close friends from the Clinton camp and which will not be forgotten.

"Lanny"? And what's up with the little implied threat to Gov. Richardson in his last comment? I'm sure Richardson and perhaps Obama are both trembling with fear at the wrath of "Lanny".

5. RE: #4....Seems I recall that the Clinton Camp fired the first
shot in that little brouhaha. Wasn't it Carville who called Richardson a "Judas" for making the endorsement?

Why get angry over the Obama campaign doing the very things the Clinton Camp would have done had the situation been reversed?

Timing is everything, and it looks like Obama has a knack for getting it right every time.

7. 5. Couldn't resist winning the election.
Ultimately, the source of all of the bitterness and anger from the Clinton camp is the simple fact that they lost.

But I agree with you, Lanny Davis is getting pretty funny these days. I kind of like it when he's on TV because you can never tell what craziness he's gonna come up with next.

39. Dantex, you nailed it!
Ultimately, the source of all of the bitterness and anger from the Clinton camp is the simple fact that they lost. That is where the anger is coming from. I thought Joan Walsh's head was going to explode on Hardball. Her anger was palpable. But it's an anger that stems from losing, plain and simple. The Clinton camp is angry at the Obama camp for doing what winners do. They are angry that they have lost, plain and simple.

Hillary's WV and KY wins amounted to NOTHING because they weren't by the SEVENTY-TWO-point margin she needed to prevent Obama from clinching. He had every right to announce that he'd clinched the delegate lead--why pretend that he hadn't? And having clinched the delegate lead, why shouldn't he start looking at VPs? Cue the DU "Cry Me A River" String Quartet!

I couldn't decide if he was genuinely calling Obama a dick, or offering up a different take on media sexism.

FTR, the things Davis lists, I don't have a problem with. Calling that stuff low is in the category of being jealous because they didn't think of it first.

14. Oh wow. I thought this was a parody. Lanny Davis really wrote this!
Good heavens, these are really his complaints? The childishness is pretty striking here. Look at these "slights" by Obama:

1. He used good timing to his political advantage during an election contest.

2. He gave a celebratory speech when it looked like he had won a majority of the pledged delegates.

This is not to say supers don't count, but the campaign parsing & manipulating the meaning of "popular vote majority" doesn't have any high ground to sieze when it comes to marketing your reaching of milestones.

3. When it looked like he was certain to win, he quietly started looking for a running mate. Then, out of consideration to his opponent, he didn't make a big announcement about getting the process started.

4. Included a popular and effective governor among his possible VPs after that governor had endorsed him.

This is just about the pissiest little list of faux complaints I've ever seen. I can see someone getting pissed about the Annie Oakley joke, but nothing listed here is even close to being an insult. Politics is a rough sport, Lanny. Either grow up or get a new hobby.

Again, I'm an Obama supporter and I disagree with you, but Lanny Davis did not do the Clinton campaign a service by naming these as his talking points. Like I stated in the OP, I have read many more issues that Clinton supporters seemed to be pissed about than the fact that "Richardson might be considered for VP...a name that inspires the most hatred by even the moderate Clinton supporters!"

I lost all respect for Richardson when he came out for Obama after HRC won NM. I'd never
vote for him If I were a resident of NM since he doesn't seem to care too much for the wishes of the voters. But I still look to Obama's negative personal traits and inexperience as most important.

What Richardson did, I look at as Richardson's very serious personal problem. He disrespected the voters of his state. Now if NM went for Obama, I'd have no problem with his coming out for Omama. Likewise I'd have a problem with a governor coming out for Clinton if the state were won by Obama.

Yes, that's POINT 8 percent.

As a Californian, I'd be ENRAGED if all our superdelegates went to Hillary after Obama got over a million votes here. I would similarly think it was pretty cheesy if all the SD's in, say, Illinois, went for Obama.

They're free agents, and they're free to pick the candidate they think would make the best president. Richardson looked at both of them, and made up his own mind.

Her delusion is not his problem. Plenty of other folks have started the VP search when the race had similar numbers to this one.

The difference is their opponent's recognized that, got out of the race and got in line to help beat the GOP.

24. They love sowing this bitterness
and it's so frustrating because we have all sat here and had to watch Obama be held to higher standards than previous candidates. He has had to walk on eggshells with nearly everything he's said and done regarding Hillary so as not to piss off her supporters, and even that didn't help when they take the most minor things and turn them into outrages, especially the likes of Geraldine Ferraro and the false claims of sexism. They (the pundits today) were bending over backwards to defend Hillary's "misspeak" and the most serious gaffe by Obama was made into a campaign ad, yet he is getting slandered for daring to be offended at her horribly tacky comment (even though he was pretty decent about the whole thing, a lot more decent than she would've been as past actions by her prove). Grrr.

always takes the low road while the media sits complicitly (sans Keith). He makes a gaffe or has a "pastor problem" and the media (con Hillary) works it over for months. He is a statesman indeed. The Clintons lost. They will have to come to terms with this very soon, like in about a week.

52. He's absolutely right about point #1.
My phone was ringing off the hook that night with several people saying they would not vote for Obama and one even saying that he would now vote for McCain.

It was disrespectful to parade Edwards out on the night after she had trounced Obama by 41% points. Her supporters saw it as another slap in the face to our candidate. She wins by a huge margin, but the media and his campaign teated it dismissively and made fun of her voters.

Do you really think that these people will forget it by November?
