So, what will Sen. Clinton's role at the convention be? |
|
Kinda interesting question I'll throw out there for anyone who wants to answer...
Assuming that Obama's the nominee (not a big assumption, admittedly) and that Sen. Clinton is not the VP nominees (a much larger assumption), what will Hillary's role at the convention be? No matter what happens between now and then (barring running as an Independent), she'll be there and in the prime speaking spot... so what does she do with it? And in what manner?
Extra Credit: What is President Clinton's role at the convention?

... and I agree. As bitter as this fight has been on their side, I still tend to think that a large part of that is simply political gamesmanship (sorry, dunno the gender-neutral term) and that, like Jake says below, they'll deliver a couple of barnstormers in support of Obama.

29. I recall that as I am in PA |
|
I also recall them not standing up in Florida in 2000 (projection much to 2008, Camp Clinton?) and Ohio in 2004.
It was all a setup for her 2008 run.
Now that her political career is over, I wouldn't trust her with an (unchecked/un-time delayed) open mike to save my life.

36. I can't believe that you remember it this way. Gore didn't want Clinton getting involved |
|
in the race--his assistance was not desired. Gore has never complained because he had the level of involvement he wanted from Bill Clinton.
Most Democrats didn't take the position that Ohio was stolen. I don't believe that John Kerry took that position.
Hillary's career is not over--I don't even know where you are getting that from. First of all, her term in NY lasts through January 2013. Second, have you seen polling that indicates she is in trouble there. The recent poll I had showed her with 55% favorables. Then there are Democrats who don't like her but will still vote for her over the GOP candidate. And with 55% favorables (a higher number then a recent poll I saw for John Kerry in MA) she isn't losing a primary so quickly. So she is looking good for re-election. Not to mention that 4 1/2 years is an eternity in politics. By the Fall--whether you like it or not--Obama is going to need her to do A LOT of campaigning for him.
It is quite possible that Obama is going to get blown out in November, in which case he will be about as well-regarded other losing Democratic candidates are--and you know what a fratricidal party we are. Gore is the one exeception. On the other hand, there is nothing we respect more then a candidate who loses the primary and then on Election day is shown by the exit polls to have been a winner if only they were nominated.
Admittedly, we usually don't nominate someone who has run before and lost, Gore being the one exception as a sitting VP. So it won't be so easy for Hillary to run again.
It is almost amusing to me to hear Clinton-haters suggest that they didn't want Gore to winin 2000. It epitomizes the hysteria and arrogance that has invaded our party. It is the hallmark of McGovernism--and a losing GE campaign.
You don't have to trust her....Obama needs her. And not liking that fact doesn't make it go away.

Bill on the trail in 2000. Kept him at a very low, out of the way profile. That was Al's choice and a big controversy during and after the campaign.

I expect she'll be there as the loyal opposition to get some issues near and dear to her in the platform.
I expect she will be nominated, she will be seconded - even if she has to do that, herself - there will be a vote and she won't have enough delegates to win the nomination. At which point she'll fade into the background.
