Have you ever noticed the look teenagers get, when they think they are the first people |
|
on the planet to discover sex??? They think nobody before them, ever had it. They think they are so cool and hip and they become especially pompous.
They would never admit their parents engaged in physical activity....and shutter at the idea.
So goes this Primary Season, and the over the top, new political "experts" here at DU.
The "take no prisoners, burn all bridges and my way or the highway" proclamations are peppered throughout DU daily.
Soon, the sugar high energy will fizzle out in a crash and burn and leave the participants dazed and disillusioned.
It will then be the fault of "the system" the "party" and anyone who had an diverging opinion.
And the scores of "grey-hairs" who have tried to moderate, insert reason, and offer balanced debate, will be left to clean up the mess.

1. It was the same with the Ned Lamont fiasco. |
|
Edited on Sat May-31-08 08:25 AM by yibbehobba
There were a lot of people out there saying, "Don't do this. This is going to be a disaster. All you are doing is making Lieberman more powerful." And, naturally, we were shouted down as idiots, traitors, freepers, etc.
So naturally Lieberman mauled Lamont (who had only one issue and couldn't campaign his way out of a paper bag) in the general, proving once and for all that the Democratic party needed Lieberman a lot more than Lieberman needed them, setting the stage for his current self-aggrandizing nonsense.

2. Interesting analogy. Lieberman is a loose cannon that needs to be reigned in by those |
|
who put him in office.
If all politics are local, then the people of Connecticut should start demanding that a fraud was perpetrated.
It is hard to get people to move on from the "ain't it awful" to "what can we do about it."
Activism is a bitch, and hard work.

4. Hold on there - Lieberman won because he was the de facto Republican candidate-not any other reason. |
|
The GOP threw their own Republican candidate under the bus in Connecticut in favor of Lieberman. He could not, and would not, have won without the Republican vote.

All of that was predicted, and it was clear from the very beginning that the Republicans were running a sacrificial candidate, and that it didn't really matter who won the Democratic primary. These predictions were ignored, or worse derided. I'm not really keen on rewriting history and pretending that the netroots' "OMG how did this happen?!?" response was borne out of any sort of critical thinking. They ignored the evidence they didn't like, and now we are ALL paying the price.

3. The thing with youth... yeah, they're pompous, yeah, they think they know better... |
|
and typically their inexperience foils their exuberance. But, often, they are right. They have watched and learned from those that came before and sometimes see what doesn't work. and they bring new ideas. Often those new ideas really do change things. Often they are more in tune with the times and are more effective because of that.
Kids do come across as cocky and self-assured, but i always watch them closely, because often their ideas are a breath of fresh air and when they see things through their innocent, I-can-do-better-than-that lens, I always learn something.
I largely agree with what you are saying, but as a grey-hair myself, watching my two enterprising, smart and self-confident sons blazing new trails, I'm filled with hope that the younger generation will do fine.
Especially with the mess that we are leaving for them.

12. Have you ever noticed that you lack a strong command of the English language? |
|
The word is "shudder", not "shutter".
Oh, and I see what you tried to do there. Better break out the hot sauce, because you'll be eating those words soon enough, should you be implying what I believe that I'm inferring here... And if not, this is your friendly neighborhood English Nazi, signing off!

So, I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that most here have followed other political races in the past.

Your parents thought your generation was a bunch of fuck-ups too. As did their parents about them and their parents about them.
Old people thinking the new generation is a bunch of idiots is as old as the first parents.

17. It has been interesting to read all of the responses. The "youth" I speak of are political |
|
neophytes who proclaim their moral authority and superior knowledge based on their "feelings" and continuously give short shrift to views not of their own.
You know, the ones who do the nasty and disturb rather than contribute. Those are the ones I speak of.
I agree wholeheartedly with those responses that talk about the exuberance and passion of the young, as well as their ability to get it right.

23. I am also taken aback by the |
|
"take no prisoners, burn all bridges and my way or the highway" proclamations. I can not attribute them to any age group, however. I have yet to figure out their source, their motivation or their goal, but, in general, I find it very counter-productive and undemocratic.
