This was the guy on C-Span, reading an article about Obama visiting Puerto Rico, and saying "Hello" in Spanish.
Hollah!

1. That reminds me of an old joke |
|
A fellow was talking to his co-workers about a recent trip he'd made to Mexico. "I went to Juarez", he said, pronouncing the "J" like we do in English.
"No," a co-worker corrected him, "It's 'Hwar-ez'. In Spanish, 'J' is pronounced like our 'H'. When were you there?"
"In Hune and Huly," was the answer.

2. We have a Spanish surname |
|
When we were living in Indiana, it used to drive us crazy that nobody knew how to pronounce the double-L configuration.
One guy says to my husband, "If you ain't Italian, I don't know nuthin'"
That was when we decided to give up. :-)

3. I have a French surname |
|
and people are always mispronouncing it, so I know what you mean. I do try to pronounce Spanish correctly, but I have had to be reminded that 'll' is pronounced like 'y' in English, which makes me feel foolish. I hope I can remember to say it right now!

6. I'm sure I would pronounce the French inadequately! |
|
I think the best neumonic device for the double-L is to think, Spanish = tortilla, Italian = tortollini.
Now I'm hungry.

9. My problem is my surname is my married name |

I took German in school, so I pronounce my own surname with a German accent!
Thanks for the lesson in the difference between Spanish and Italian. And yes, you've made me hungry as well!

Little did I know at that time how La Jolla was pronounced! :hi:
