I know there are people here who don't like comparing Bush to Hitler but
you can't imagine my surprise when my mom did just that this morning.

As many of you have heard, Mom is a lifelong Democrat and was supporting Kerry before I was. She's not given to making wild statements. Up until now the worse she's done is call bush "that asshole" whenever his name comes up. and she's not given to making wild statements. She's also 80 years old and has never paid much heed to me when I refer to someone as a facist - she has, quite frankly, been one of those who has truly believed "it can't happen here".

Anyway, in the last few days she's read a couple articles about Bush's people requiring people to sign loyalty oaths and not letting anyone into his rallies that might not be ardent supporters. This is, apparently, the last straw for Mom... She called this morning with quite a rant going (in which she mentioned the Patriot Act and Homeland Security as well) which ended with "This is like the Nazis - he's using the Secret Service like Brown Shirts, he really does think he's a dictator. I don't see how anyone who lived through WWII could vote for him...This is just what we fought against.."

1. Good I am glad others are seeing it finally...and it is people
in your mothers generation who need to get the word to others because people won't think of them as tin foil hats....

2. Actually, in at least one respect Hitler was better than W -
He went to the war and served bravely.

3. I'm glad there are people out there who like
your Mom..putting the pieces together.

I told someone Saturday about that ..signing the pledge at their rallies and even though this was a Kerry supporter he still couldn't believe the outrageousness of it. He kept saying .."no, that can't be true!"

4. I loathe the Comparisons
The reason being is that my grandfather was one during WWII and the stories my father told me when he was alive were just horrible so it's never sat well with me.

But your mother's point is dead on, too. The Ashcroft bullshit, loyalty oaths and all that obscene crap is reminiscent.

What bothers me the most about it is the avid devotion that so many people have towards Bush and his administration. They don't want to see the reality of which we're living much like the germans at that time.

My father told me they didn't want to see it and it wasn't until it was too late when they realized what had gone on. He was a teen when he came here. If he were still alive, I think he'd move back to Germany. I really do.

The comparisons are disturbing, but not that far of the mark.

5. Show that pic to your mom. I'm sure she will love it :

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator."

7. The people who get upset at the comparisons
are thinking about the atrocities committed by Hitler. They're not thinking about the way he rose to power and the totalitarian tactics he and his people used to get there. THAT is the comparison that should scare everyone. Imagine if the Germans had had a Hitler to compare theirs to. Maybe things never would have gotten as bad as they did.

15. So True
I read Hitler's Willing Executioners and what stuck out at me more than anything was the mindset of the time. Anti-semitism was fairly normal prior to Hitler taking power. They just didn't start doing much about it until after Hitler came on the scene.

There was also rampant fear, much like now, and we all knkow this administration has used it to their advantage.

A group of Arabs were on a plane and I guess they got a little out of hand partying on the plane. A few people got worked up because they thought they were going to get hijacked. I don't remember exactly happened, but to me it shows that there are people who panic unnecessarily at the site of someone who may or may not be an Arab.

For a lot of people Islam is a scary thing. It's such a foreign culture that very few people even understand now.

I remember growing up as a kid and watching the news. It scared the hell out of me everytime I saw covered faces of terrorists with their guns up in the air. Watching people in the Middle East burn the American flag and furiously chanting I would wonder why they hated me. I couldn't figure it.

I believe Bush, Cheney, Ashcroft and the like, tapped into this fear effectively after 9/11. It went to our most basic fears that these rabidly angry people hated us and the lengths they would go to in order to kill us.

What's even more disturbing for me, is that Bush and his goons are playing right into those terrorists hands in every way possible.

This is a dangerous, reckless and arrogant administration. I feel it is my duty and responsibility to get these people out of MY White House.

9. My problem with it is that it hurts our credibility and minimizes Hitler's
evil. Hitler's wars killed over fifty MILLION people. Bush's adventures are a rounding error compared to that.

11. Give Bush time
Hitler didn't kill 50 million in his first 4 years either.

I think, as said above, Mom's "revelation" had more to do with what was going on in the first few years of the Third Reich.

16. No = Bush's family OWNED Hitler - he was one of their puppets, SO
any comparison is apt and NOT a diminution of the horrors of Hitler. It is a reaffirmation of how the Bushes corruption from Hitler in WWII to Saddam to the Saudis anmd Sharon is JUST THE SAME as Hitler.

12. Hitler was driven, talented, and evil
Bush is a stumbling, idiotic, failure.

They really aren't alike at all except for the damage they have wreaked on the world (and even there, Bush still trails significantly.)

Hitler was HITLER.
Bush is just a "likeable" Gerald Ford.
