What do you think Obama told Hillary?
This thread is to allow everyone to guess what they think Obama told Hillary at their meeting.

Here's mine:

1. The VP selection is a process, it will take weeks, and nothing will change that.

2. She is on the short list for VP.

3. All the people on the short list will be vetted by Obama's people.

4. Vetting will require that people on the short list make full public disclosures of financial relationships, past and present.

5. He needs her to help heal the party.

6. He can promise she will be able to call on him, can't promise any major position as yet.

7. He's amenable to helping her try to retire some of her debt.

1. All of the above plus a few other things that only politicians are
savvy to and about.

2. What do you think she told Obama?
I'm thinking she wants money, respect, and position, in that order.

She probably knows position is harder for him to commit to, but he can give her respect and deliver to her money through fund raising.

26. She probably said
"you know, you did well, I'm really disappointed that I lost but I'm willing to support you now. I just want you to know that this was just politics, nothing personal." And they probably did discuss the things you stated.

10. Ha! Metaphorically speaking.
I think that's the one thing he wants everyone to realize. He's in charge of picking the VP, it's an important decision, and he's not going to be rushed or pushed.

Another poster noted that the financial disclosures don't necessarily need to be made public. They just need to be disclosed to the vetting committee, to avoid later (hypothetical) embarrassment.

8. I think they will need to be made public, to allow media to vet them
If Obama gets the info, but doesn't have it publicly disclosed, he has to take the risk on every non disclosure. If all items are disclosed, the media and public will focus on the matters that are a problem for them. This would allow Obama to sit back and make sure that his potential VP can pass muster by public and media scrutiny.

By doing it this way, Obama allows the media, not him, to be the attack dogs on Bill's half billion dollar foundation fund.

I think Obama wants the Clintons to remove her from consideration, either before or after they make full public disclosure of all their finances. By doing it this way, he can stand back and not appear to be telling her she can't be on the ticket. If they make full public disclosure, the outcry against Bill's bed fellows will likely be ugly.

14. I never actually noticed the height difference
He's bent at the waist and shoulder to lean in close enough to hear her and he's still got 3 or 4 inches on her. He's got to have nearly a foot standing tall. He didn't strike me as that tall and she never struck me as short.

People who have seen them in person...is he that tall or is she that short or is it a combination of both?

(Idle curiosity. I don't really have a point. I'm tall (6'4") so I find height differences to be interesting.)

9. Why do you think that? I'd think he'd do a lot of both.
He's moving rapidly to address his major concerns as this process transitions. He'll want to know what is on her mind, but he'll have to make sure she knows she cannot push him on the VP process.

11. Respect.
Just my gut, of course, but Tuesday she was very clear that she wanted to make sure her supporters weren't forgotten, and given the respect they deserve. I think one way to show that he agrees with her on this is by listening to her concerns and giving her assurances that they'll be taken seriously.

I'm not saying he only listened. I'm sure he told her where he stands and how he envisions the process unfolding from here, but I would be surprised to discover that the bulk of the conversation revolved around him displaying a "here's the program, get with it" kind of attitude.

12. I'm sure Hillary is more comfortable talking than listening.
And he's more comfortable listening than talking, at least in that circumstance.

I think he probably did do a lot of listening, for the reasons you state.

is the thing she was least willing to give to him.

at how easy it was to lead the MSM around by the nose and keep all the media attention on Democrats and their causes while Grandpa withered away in a dark corner of politica.

22. I think the conversation
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 10:46 AM by cricket08
had nothing to do with all the evil gossip and put downs regarding Hillary wanting the VP position. I think the conversation was around Obama's promise to make Universal Health Care his mandate and to deliver it. That's what she cares about passionately.

I also think their conversation included some profuse apologies that are justly due the Clintons. Obama is a decent man and knows full well what happened to the Clinton's reputation in this campaign was not just. This was a conversation of reconciliation and had to include forgiveness on both their parts.
