Obama broke through the real glass ceiling |
|
I had no idea black elected politicians % was this low "An underdog black politician has secured a major party's presidential nomination in a country where less than 4 percent of its elected officials are African Americans?" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/06/AR2008060604509.html

3. Two ceilings were broken, and both equally significant. |
|
Though I agree that it started out awfully lopsided.
Gee, can a black guy named Hussein Obama have a shot against a Clinton and the DLC machine?
Yes He Can!
His win is more impressive than hers would have been, in my opinion, but congratulations to both for their historic candidacies!

5. A man who was a bastard in 17 states when he was born. |
|
A man whose parents' marriage was illegal in 17 states ... whose parents would risk their very lives if they checked in to a motel or hotel in many areas of this country at that time. A man whose most formative influences were his mother and grandmother ... STRONG, independent, progressive WOMEN. A man with a strong, independent wife and two strong daughters.
Somehow, I don't believe his crotch disqualifies him from comprehending and advancing the justice owed to ALL people, without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or religion.

He's not as aggressive as Kucinich is (finally) but he's FULLY behind equal rights and appreciates better than most the seperation of church and state. He also appreciates the divisions in our society and seeks to eradicate the political 'wedges' of such issues by taking the right direction.
Clearly, Obama isn't my or your 'perfect' candidate. If I had my way, gays (and women) would be treated fully equally ... in the military, in the draft, in employment, in marriage rights ... completely.
It's funny how I so rarely hear ANYONE arguing for full equity in Selective Service. I do. I don't make exceptions. Period.

there are many communities with almost no African Americans to draw talent from. There are however, almost no communities without women. For instance. Washington dc. A majority black city council, a black mayor, majorty black school board. Two elected woman, one the non-voting delegate to congress (who is also black) and a city council seat held by a white woman. The city is 55% female, and only two elected politicans in more than ceremonial seats, are women.

|
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 04:18 PM by bain_sidhe
Women face a glass ceiling. Blacks face a glass ceiling. They're different, but equally despicable. One of those glass ceilings was not just broken, but SHATTERED! That's great ALL BY ITSELF. You don't have to piss on those still struggling to break the other one to feel good about the one that was broken.
**edit for the BIG oops**
