Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik, left, likely will make the ballot; Green nominee David Cobb’s odds are unclear.
Ralph Nader’s independent presidential campaign has some Democrats nervous about losing votes and the election.
WASHINGTON — In a development that could raise the anxiety level among Ohio Democrats, Ralph Nader’s campaign is planning to submit his candidacy petition today to place the independent presidential hopeful on the fall ballot.
About 10,000 signatures, double the valid number required, will be handed in this morning at the Ohio secretary of state’s office, a day ahead of Thursday’s filing deadline, said Julie Coyle, who co-chairs Nader’s Ohio campaign.

Meanwhile, the Libertarian Party also is expected to submit a petition today to put its presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, on the ballot in Ohio, said Robert Butler, the party’s Ohio executive director.

Not sounding as confident are supporters of Green Party nominee David Cobb, who hope to file by the Thursday deadline. The independent campaign of Nader, the 2000 Green Party candidate, split the "progressive volunteer base," said Paul Dumouchelle, Ohio Green Party secretary. He added, "I just don’t know what we will have" in terms of the number of signatures.

At the same time, Trevas said party officials aren’t worried about a Nader candidacy in Ohio, a state considered vital for both Republican President Bush and Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry. Trevas said a "secret weapon" in Kerry’s bid to maintain the loyalty of "progressive voters" will be the support of Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland, a former presidential candidate and favorite of the party’s most liberal wing.
