UPDATE!-the sun and all life forms still revolve around Howard Wolfson
“I think Barack Obama did a pretty good job of learning from whatever mistakes we made,” he told host Wolf Blitzer. “If his campaign wants to study ours and see what we did right and wrong, I'm sure they're going to do that.”

The outspoken adviser also defended the fact that Clinton waited until Saturday to give her concession speech.

“I know we live in the minute-by-minute media culture,” he said. “I think it's a little unrealistic and frankly unfair to expect somebody who's been running for president for 18 months and has done as well as Senator Clinton did – was winning states in the last several months by 30, you know, 40 points to — on the last day of the primary — immediately come out and give a concession speech.”

Despite Wolfson’s admission that the campaign made some slip-ups, he insisted that not highlighting the history-making aspect of being the first female president was not one of them.

“It didn't seem to hurt our ability to get the votes of women who were Senator Clinton's strongest supporters. We overwhelmingly won the woman's vote in this race… African-Americans as a whole tended to vote for Senator Obama in overwhelming numbers, a great credit to him. But white women and Latinas did vote overwhelmingly for Senator Clinton, over 60 percent.”

1. When you think you are somebody, everything revolves around you.
Of course, viewed from the outside it resembles water circling a drain.

4. I listened to that interview. He actually sounded very contrite...
Wolfy asked him multiple times if he would work for the GE, and whether Obama needed his expertise. His answer was always that Obama's folks obviously know what they're doing and that he really wanted to spend time with his family now. He really sounded pretty much wiped out. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him for a while.

In other words...Book writing time!!!

6. I think I read that his mother passed away during the campaign, which made me feel bad
Haha, a funny part of me would kind of want to read his book. Well, read his book in Borders or something. Not necessarily buy it.

7. Wolfson always struck me as one of the more reasonable people in that campaign
Understanding that it's hard not to look good when you're working alongside Mark Penn.

Terry Mac Carsalesman looks like he would sell a lemon to his own grandmother for a quick buck

and Mark Penn, well he looked like he was allergic to water.
just looking at her team I am not suprized her campaign struggled the way it did.

8. You are kidding me
They ran such a poor campaign here in Iowa.. it was a great disservice to Senator Clinton..but she heads the campaign so the buck stops there. but that was more the Penn magic (not)than Wolfson.. but there is just something about Wolfson, that gives me the willies..

13. You know, you are right..there is a resemblance
there... I think what gave me the willies about Wolfson, was the detachment when he spoke.. It was cheney like.. not a cool attitude, but a icy one..

10. I have no problem with him.
In time, it will come out that he was one of the more reasonable people in the Clinton campaign. For example, when two others were advocating that Hillary Clinton continue on with her campaign as late as last week, he was instrumental in having the eight Senators call her, to say that was not an option.

15. Wolfson was paid $266,000 in one month. Obama's Robert Gibbs received $144,000 for entire year!
http://matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/06/how_obama_did_it.php

How Obama Did It

Good rundown from Karen Tumulty. I'll just say as I've said before, though, that the whole campaign dogfight is irrelevant if not for their contrasting positions on the war five years ago. This is an interesting tidbit:

Consider the salaries: Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson was paid almost twice as much in a month — $266,000 went to his firm, according to her January campaign filing — as the $144,000 that Obama paid Gibbs for all of last year.

That's a huge difference. I wonder why Clinton would pay that much? Surely recruiting staff wouldn't have been a problem for her. Money being handed out on that level tends to re-enforce my suspicion that she was pushed to stay in the race in part by senior staff whose primary motive wasn't necessarily the good of the Clinton brand, or the Democratic Party, or the country. You want to pay your advisers enough to hire good people, but you don't really want to pay so much that their motivation becomes mercenary.

17. I think people around Hillary really took advantage
Why would people like Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson be making so much money? If they really wanted her to win they wouldn't have charged her so much.

She should have got more involved and straightened up the financial part of running her campaign-it might have made a lot of difference for her. She also could be out a lot of her own money the way it turned out.

I hope someday a campaign insider writes an honest book on what happened and what went wrong for them. That would really be interesting.

18. But she LOST, Howie--she LOST.
Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 10:07 AM by rocknation
I could have forgiven Hillary for not conceding Tuesday night if she'd congratulated Obama on clinching the delegate lead and then said she'd discuss the future of her campaign at a later date. Think of how much MORE effective her Saturday speech would have then sounded! But by refusing to do that, look at all the bad will she left around. Once again, she was the victim of bad judgment and/or bad advice...but don't take that personally, Howie!
