Obama family joins neighbors for a lake shore bicycle ride

By The Associated Press – 19 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama joined family and neighbors for a bicycle ride along the shores of Lake Michigan on Sunday.

Obama, who last week claimed the Democratic presidential nomination, capped his victory with a quiet, long weekend at home in Chicago.

The Illinois senator and his wife, Michelle, rode to a neighbor's house with their daughters, Malia and Sasha, on Sunday and the group then headed out for the ride along the scenic lake shore. But the outing was cut short by a downpour.

Obama's brief respite from the campaign was scheduled to end Monday with a speech in Raleigh, N.C., and an evening fundraiser in St. Louis. The speech will launch a two-week tour of the country focused on economic issues.

2. nice to see him using alternate transportation!
i ride a bike as a primary vehicle, and love to see it!!!

(but as an expert bike rider, we really need to adjust his seat so that the bike "fits" him better, raising the seat, etc) he's too hunched over and his leg needs more length on the pedal

4. Clearly, he seldom cycles
Toes should be on the pedals, not heels.

not Lance Armstrong....

Oh, and the pedal is in the middle of his foot, same way I ride all the time

Whether or not you ride poorly as well.

36. That it! He's lost my support!!
Anybody who uses his heels on the bicycle thingy instead of his toes. What kind of a heel-riding kind of politician is he anyway?

8. Plus, his seat is adjusted too low. His leg should be almost fully extended on the downstroke.

I'd pump up the rear tire as well - but then again I cycle several times a week :)

24. Why don't you write a book on proper bike riding. I'm sure a MAJORITY of Americans, like me, could
use it.

11. Clearly he's like 99% of bike riders who just want to go for a bike ride..
and not worry about advanced pedal theory.

14. It's not advanced to put your feet on the pedals correctly
Would you make the same excuse if he held the handlebars with his wrists?

17. No, hands on handlebars, feet on pedals, butt on the seat, go for a ride.
He's not training for competition, he's riding on a paved street with his kids. He looks like any average non-cyclist riding a bike.

20. i hear ya, but
Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 10:35 AM by nomorewhopper
lol i know im a bike nerd, but his body position on that bike is similar to a guy driving his car with the seat cranked ALL THE WAY forward. his seat is so low, knees bent so far, back is super hunched over, etc. he's a tall guy, and his seat is set up for a short guy.

i should mention that in an age of $4 gasoline, it's great to see a guy riding a BIKE!!! i'm a huge fan of commuting to work on a bicycle, it's far easier than most would imagine, saves cash, gets you into great shape, helps the environment, and is really fun. i know its not for everybody, and i live in an area where there is a terrible winter, absurd traffic, and my last job was 32 miles away from my home (and i still used hte bike far more than you'd think was possible!)

23. The majority of Americans just get on their bike AND RIDE IT. They don't
consult a book about the perfect way to ride a bike. This is ridiculous.

Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 11:50 AM by Cronus Protagonist
So he doesn't ride much. Just an observation. Perhaps he should ride more and he'd do much better at it, but judging by your and other people's comments on here, one would think I'd blasphemed a God rather than simply making a minor observation.

12. No, he's not a George Bush dare devil.. he's a dad who's girls said..
please dad you promised we'd go for a bike ride.. so, he says, Michelle, "did I really agree to this?" and she said, "yes, along with that puppy, too thanks (sarcasm heavily implied)" So like a good sport, they gear up.. God forbid they weren't wearing all the appropriate gear for the fears that our next president wasn't promoting bike safety.. and they head off for a nice family bike ride.. I don't think he has any intention of taking on Lance Armstrong like the asshat in chief currently.

39. Why the press would cut off Sasha who is being towed by Obama
in these pictures should be asked. It was her birthday.

The fact that she in being towed by her dad adds context currently missing in the photo....as he is looking back at her, etc....
