Poll: Obama Leads McCain, Dominates In Key Demographics

Poll: Obama Leads McCain, Dominates In Key Demographics

By Eric Kleefeld - June 11, 2008, 6:52PM
Barack Obama leads John McCain 47%-41% in the latest NBC/Wall St. Journal poll, just outside the the ±3.1% margin of error and consistent with other polls giving Obama a post-primary bump.

More importantly, Obama is ahead with key demographics where his electability had previously been questioned. Obama leads among women 52%-33%, with Catholics 47%-40%, among independents 41%-36%, and even 47%-42% with blue-collar workers.

And contrary to the idea that his poor primary performances among Hispanics reflected an electability problem, he now leads 62%-28% with that group -- well ahead of John Kerry's 53%-44% advantage in 2004.

John McCain's big advantage is with white men, where he leads 55%-35% -- the only reason the race is as close as it is, according to the pollster's analysis.

Gallup also showed Obama leading among women.

1. As a white man I want to apologize
"John McCain's big advantage is with white men, where he leads 55%-35% ... "

We have had all the advantages and yet so many of my fellow white men seem so stupid.

6. You're okay with me Botany, and no need to apologize. I suspect it's identity
politics. I think that's to be expected in this particular race.

7. Sadly it is not just about race or being a male

In 2004 after 3.75 years of being a total fuck up still white male
voters showed support for bush .... in some part because he was
"tough warrior" even though bush went AWOL from the service
and Kerry was real life war hero.

Lots of stupid white men out there who will note vote for
what is best for the country.

9. Well, that part of your assessment I have to agree with. Perhaps it's
the infamous "Nascar Dad" who still supports the current criminal enterprise, and by extension, McCain.

13. In 2004 I met the man John Kerry pulled from the river in Veitnam
long story short

John's boat hit a mine and a man got thrown into the river .... the boat started
taking fire from the shore ..... Kerry got hit in the shoulder by shrapnel (3" higher
and it would have killed him) ..... Kerry had the boat turn around and go pick up
the wounded man .... Kerry crawled out to pull them man on deck which exposed
him to enemy fire .... he won the bronze star for this.

The man he saved was became a republican deputy sheriff in S. California but he
like all members of Kerry's crew loved that man but a controlled press gave us
the "swift boat vets."

I met more than one angry white man w/ Vets against Kerry bumper
sticker on their cars ..... they acted like Kerry was "man enough" or something.

Some White Male voters are just stupid or have been feed enough "Rush & Fox"
that they buy the lies.

No need to apologize for those who are.

3. Not mentioned in the linked articles, but I'm pretty sure Kerry lost white men by 25 points.
So Obama's actually closed that gap by five points, if that's the case.

This really isn't bad news, even on that front (although as a white guy I, too, am aghast that so many of my peers continue to cling to this warmongering fool.)

4. I'd like to see the full crosstabs
Given Obama's strength among younger voters, even white men, I am wondering what the breakdown is for older white men. In order to be leading 20% among white men overall while more than likely trailing among white men under 35 or so, McCain must be dominating among older white men.

5. This is good news overall.
McCain is losing ground and the republicans desperate attacks on Obama is only going to backfire.

12. He won't help with white men.

He's popular at DU, but he's got no constituency anywhere in the country. He won't help win a single state.
