So, I jotted down a few ideas, things I think it would help is if everyone here did just a couple of them. I've only been active in the Democratic Party since '04, so let me know if anything doesn't make sense or if you know of other things we can be doing to make a difference this November.
GET TOGETHER WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO WANT TO USHER IN NEW BLOOD INTO THE WHITE HOUSE:
Look in your phone book under *your county* Democratic Party to see if a group is already formed. If so, start there with these ideas. If not, run an ad in the local paper (ask them to place it in their calendar of events section, it's free) announcing a time and place you'd like to meet with local Democrats to get together and discuss what you can do to make a difference this election. Contact your State Democratic Party HQ to let them know about your meeting, they are waiting to hear from you and will give you whatever help you need. They're ready with ideas about precinct organization, getting out the vote, etc. Even if your group is only a handful, that's a handful more than they had in your area yesterday. You are a part of the 50 state strategy!! As you start attending events to GOTV your group should grow. This is our year. (Does anyone know the link to the list of Dem Party State offices?)
VOTER REGISTRATION:
1. Visit your County Board of Elections (BOE), ask for a box of Voter Registration Forms and ask if there are any special instructions you should know about filling them out. Most people who take the form from you to fill out at home don’t, it’s best to help them fill it out then turn it in to the BOE for them.
2. Contact all of the high schools in your county and see if you can set up a table in the lunchroom for voter registration – if you can’t set a date before the end of school year, plan to do this first thing in the fall. Anyone who will turn 18 on or before November 4 ’08 can register anytime before then. Go where many young adults are – Community Colleges, etc.
3. Keep registration forms in your car to pass out to young adults who are working summer jobs, ask at drive-thru windows if the employee there would like a form.
4. Visit your county’s web page, local newspaper web pages to find out about upcoming events (4th of July, festivals, county fairs, etc). Contact organizers about setting up a table to register voters, or show up with friends, registration forms, and clip boards and hang out in the parking lot where people are going into these events if you can't set up a table.
5. Visit houses that have Hillary and Obama signs in the yard – they might still be pumped up from the primary and eager to help you walk through neighborhoods or events to register voters. Ask if they'd like to be on an e-mail list to coordinate activities with them, ask if they'd like to organize their precinct.
6. Talk about the election everywhere! Ask everyone what they're thinking about November 4 - a person passionate about Obama should be included in your group! We're just 4 months away and every bit of help we can give Obama and your locals will really make the difference!
Anyone have anything else to add?
