3. Time: Obama and the Economy
Obama and the Economy
Thursday, Jun. 12, 2008 By JUSTIN FOX

When Barack Obama says a John McCain Administration would amount to a third term of George W. Bush, he's not just blowing smoke, especially when it comes to economic policy. Yes, McCain is a very different kind of man, with a different history, who will face a set of challenges and opportunities that are different from those confronting Bush. But look through the Republican candidate's campaign pledges on the economy, and you'll see that they really do add up to a continuation of Bush's focus on cutting taxes (especially taxes on corporate and capital income) and moving economic decisions (and burdens) into the hands of individuals.

...Which leaves us with Obama the visionary and Obama the problem solver. When Obama pledges to make higher education more affordable or rebuild the country's battered and neglected infrastructure, he can sound almost as poetic and inspiring as when he talks about, you know, "change for America."

But those kinds of things don't directly address today's pressing economic problems. So Obama has had to come up with three short-term fixes: a $50 billion fiscal-stimulus program, much of it devoted to extending unemployment insurance beyond the current 26-week limit and helping struggling state governments; an aggressive foreclosure-prevention effort, with $10 billion in funding; and a tax cut for Americans making less than $150,000 a year, to be financed with tax increases on those making more than $200,000 a year. These add up to what you could call the stock Democratic response to tough times. They're not necessarily bad ideas, but they're not the kind of thing that is going to get 20,000 people on their feet and shouting at a campaign rally.

What these proposals definitely are, though, is different from what Bush has been doing. Which helps explain why Obama's most compelling economic argument remains the fact that on the economy, McCain sounds an awful lot like Bush.

4. Winsconsin, a Barack Obama stronghold?
Wisconsin, a Barack Obama stronghold?
Don Frederick June 12, 2008

Whatever it is Barack Obama has going in Wisconsin, his campaign would be well advised to bottle it and ship it.

The state, with its 10 electoral votes, is a mainstay on lists of this year's battlegrounds because of the results there in the 2000 and 2008 presidential races.

Eights years ago, Al Gore carried it over George W. Bush by 5,708 votes out of almost 2.6 million cast. Four years ago, John Kerry did slightly better, winning it in his matchup with Bush by 11,384 votes out of almost 3 million cast.

...
The survey, a joint venture by the University of Wisconsin and WisPolitics.com. and conducted from Sunday through Tuesday, gave Obama a 13-percentage-point lead over John McCain, 50% to 37%.

Perhaps it isn't to be believed. A poll earlier this month by Rasmussen Reports showed the contest more in line with the past barnburners -- Obama led by only 2 points, 45% to 43%.

5. The Lunatic Fringe wants Obama's birth certificate vetted by a genealogist
A Question For the History Buffs
By: John Cole at 11:26 am

Has any other candidate for President been required to prominently and publicly display his/her birth certificate to prove they are American (particularly after they have already won the nomination)?

If so, I am unaware of this happening. If not, I guess this is just more proof of Geraldine Ferraro’s thoughtful “black guys have it easy” thesis.

*** Update ***

The verdict from the lunatic fringe- it isn’t good enough! the birth certificate needs additional debunking. A genealogist needs to be summoned to determine whether or not Obama’s father is indeed “African.”

You think I am kidding? Check out the comments at Hot Air.

*** Update #2 **

I am looking at my original birth certificate right now, from WV, and it does not specify what hospital I was born in, or what time I was born. Interestingly enough, it does not ask what “race” I am, it simply asks what color I am (“White”, the birth certificate informs us). Although if we wanted to haggle, sometimes when I have had too much sun I take on a pinkish red. Clearly there is a conspiracy in WV regarding my birth.

9. Rahm Emanuel vs. the PUMAs
Rahm Emanuel vs. the PUMAs
Kevin K. on 06/12/08 at Rump Roast

Hey, PUMA pity party poopers, look over here:

Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, a Democratic House leader who helped orchestrate the party’s strategy for winning control of Congress in 2006, argues against reading too much into the holdouts. He said most of them always stay out of national politics and that the party is generally unified around Obama.

“They’re just going to stick to their knitting,” he said. “It’s not that they’re anti-Obama.”

Begin the spittle!

11. It's Our Camelot
On First Ladies Named Michelle.....and Diane
Jack and Jill Blog Thursday, June 12, 2008

Nichelle at Anovelista.com has done a very good article on Black First Ladies (Michelle Fenty, Michelle Paterson, Diane Patrick, and Michelle Obama). I liked this article because it was positive, gave proper respect to these women, and pushed forth why they're fabulous. And, because we live in a world where a national network finds as many ways as they can to demean the possible First Lady, we spread the word about fabuous Black women such as these.

I just wanted to excerpt some of the Michelle Obama parts of the article:

It's Our Camelot

Does a Black First Lady matter? It certainly does to me, but I wanted to ask other Black women about it so I started with my grandmother. I called and asked if a Black First Lady would make a difference to her and she thought that she heard me wrong and asked if I was kidding her. Ditto for my aunt, who is also my grandmother's sister. "Are you kidding me? In my lifetime? Both of them would do us well. Everything about them is such a plus for us. I'm just so proud of them already."

And, as you might have guessed, that is the same answer I got over and over. I figured as much, but I didn't want to assume. One of my friends also just came right out and said it. "It's our Camelot. To see a man like Barack Obama run such an amazing campaign is one thing, but to see his dynamic, pretty, relatable Black wife by his side is a huge (make that HUGE!) plus in his column."

I don't know if people realize just how deep this sentiment runs with many black women. I have received lots, and I do mean lots, of email forwards from other black women, simply filled with gorgeous family photos of the Obama family or especially affectionate pictures of Barack and Michelle hugging, snuggling... dancing. Seriously! If you are a black woman, how many times did the following picture appear in your inbox?
