Michelle Obama's makeover got off to a rocky start.

Appearing on Wednesday as a guest host on The View, Mrs. Obama was asked by Barbara Walters whether she wanted her husband to be president. Mrs Obama said "no", and then seemed to say he is "sweet and pathetic."

Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor claimed after the program that she had actually said "empathetic." Give her the benefit of the doubt: Empathetic, not pathetic.

Still, Mrs. Obama's appearance on the popular talk show did not go well. Hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd seemed to instantly realize this, going out of their way to recast her awkward wording.

The Obama camp is reportedly on the case trying to prepare Mrs. Obama for prime time. And there is clearly work to be done.

I wish these Republican spin masters would quit telling us what we saw and putting their right slanted interpretation on it. What I saw was a well educated, woman next door who is articulate, intelligent, loves her family, is well grounded from her roots. On top of all of this she has wonderful natural beauty. When Mrs. McCain hosted The View we saw Barbie Doll.

We're going to have to stand up for our candidate and his family til this whole thing is over. Look at the content folks. There is a great difference in these two candidates and their spouses. WHO NEEDS THE MAKE OVER?

I've only watched that show a couple times but someone posted a sort of heads up thread here yesterday.

When that statement was misunderstood it was a moment of total levity. . . as if a candidate's wife would EVER suggest such a thing.

There was also that mum who posted the personal letter her 5 year old recently received from Obama where he mentioned empathy and (paraphrasing) told the kid to look the word up if he wasn't familiar with the word.

That made Michelle's misconstrued statement all the more poignant.

I'm not that familiar with Crawford but his commentary is thoroughly bogus in regard to this matter.

I doubt KO would speak ill of him either. I remember when Craig used to be on KO's show all the time. They both were critical of Obama. As the campaign went on KO became more disenchanted with the way the Clinton's ran their campaign and more impressed with Obama's organization. That's when Craig Crawford stopped appearing on the show.

I watched her yesterday and I heard empathic. I have a slight hearing loss and I didn't have a problem. It seems like people want to hear the worst from her, no matter what she says. I guess the MSM is fearful of strong, honest women. Instead of applause of how focused she is on her family they invent a gaffe. Go figure.

The Republicans will be putting enough negative spin on everything they do.

We need to be supporting our candidate by dismissing the GOP frame and reframing it ourselves, not piling on.

Of course the conservative corporate media is piling on. We all expected that. I am not saying we should ignore them.

What I am saying is that we need to react differently to their attacks.

Instead of getting caught up in trying to counter every point they make, we need to reply by restating the issue from our frame and try to make them counter our points.

That is how you reframe the debate.
If we do it consistently and stubbornly, they will have no choice but to start addressing our frame of reference.

That is what the Republicans started doing 30 years ago and it has worked very well for them. We may be a little behind but we know what we need to do. We just need to start doing it.

I reccommend everyone check out George Lakoff's books on framing, "Don't think of an elephant" or "Who's Freedom?"

Not only was Michelle Obama gracious, she was swarmed for photos and autographs after the show. The producers spoke extensively about the charisma she exhumed and how impressed they and many of the audience members were with her.

Why do you "reporters" insist on making shit up when it's really nothing there? If you don't really like the person, then just come out and say it without all the sneaky "neerer, neerer," stuff. Come on Craig, do what the late Tim Russert was asking of reporters this political season. Keep to the issues and not the petty "gotcha" stuff. You'll like yourself better in the morning. Michelle Obama just got an "A+" from an a "Public Relations Consultant" on FAUX" and the message said, "Fraiser Seitel, who was just discussing Michelle Obama's performance on The View called it a "shut out" and a "ten strike," saying she cleared the air and came across as pleasant, personable, and patriotic." He was talking with Shepard Smith."

If she DID say "pathetic" Faux would've jumped all over it. Not even HANNITY said anything about "pathetic" when interviewing the RW Elisabeth Hasselbeck yesterday about Michelle's appearance.
