Obama's Proposal For Lincoln Douglas Debate Format - McCain Rejects? |
|
This proposal was first raised by Hillary Clinton in the primaries, but it has been given new life by Obama in the debate about debates. Of course, McCain has offered 10 townhall meetings. The Obama has counted with 5 in a mixture of formats, including the a LD debate format.
My thought is that this would be kind of cool from a history/political geek point of view. First, its the 150th anniversay of the LD debates. Second, Obama is from Illinois and Lincoln and Douglas were from Illinois. Third, it does provide candidates with a way to directly address the people rather than through the filter of a major network.
Of course, each network will probably offer some sort of running commentary, and Fox will probably including scrolling graphics with reference to Baby's Mama everytime Obama speaks.

3. Lincoln Douglas Would Also Recall The Issue Of The Day - Race and Slavery |
|
I think it would be historic to conduct a Lincoln Douglas Debate between the Illinois Senatator and the GOP nominee. Indeed, since the subject of the original debate was slavery, the debate format would further emphasize the historic nature of Obama's candidacy. 150 years ago, Lincoln and Douglas were debating slavery. Today, an African American is running for the Presidency.
My thought is how can the GOP refuse, since Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Wouldn't it be unpatriotic of John McCain to refuse an homage to Abraham Lincoln, one of the great Presidents in American history?
