My sister is getting hate mail over her Obama sign.
She lives in rural Florida. The other day while she was driving home she saw a guy on a motorcycle slow down, stop in front of her sign, and spit on it. He was unaware that the home-owner was behind him and she was afraid to confront him. Today she e-mailed me that she had gotten hate mail about the sign. I worry about her. They live off a dirt road in a relatively isolated area. Yikes! I'm thinking she should take the sign down.

1. We have had our Obama signs stolen twice.
We had Kerry signs burned but we have never been approached by the chicken*hits that did the deeds. These folks are wounded dogs from earlier lives. I hope that she does not have any trouble.

You are lucky that you have an open minded community. We change minds one at a time in our neck of the woods. Peace, Kim

2. she should put up a second sign next to it
Something about the homeowner believing in the right of the 2nd Amendment to pack a gun. This tends to keep away the nuts in Florida; their worst nightmare is a liberal packing heat.

7. Funny you should say that.
Her husband is a hunter and has several guns in the house. I've never liked the idea of guns but now I'm rather comforted by the thought.

47. I posted a comment before
reading this asking if she had an objection to guns. Glad to hear she doesn't and she should let everyone know about it. Buncha fucking cowards will leave her alone if they know she's armed.

48. She should put up 100 Obama signs and 101 2nd Amendment signs.
Then install cameras to record trespassers, send copies of the videos to the local police.

5. After eight years the republican party has divided this country through hate
actually longer if you include the "southern strategy" started by nixon

The end is near for the neocon, pnac, and racists, and they know it

Rather than the sign, it is far better to volunteer to get voters registered

We are going to win all three branches of government

That should take care of anyone dumb enough to steal it.

12. My bumper sticker was peeled off. Get used to it.
My car was "keyed" in 2004 as soon as I put a Kerry sticker on it.

This year, it's all they got. There will be violence, but we're going to win this time, no matter how much intimidation they unleash.

42. It would be
Interesting to find out how brave this letter writer is.

I find the whole yard sign thing very disturbing. Very.

People who are that outraged need to seek help. I don't like my neighbors having a McCain sign but I would never take it or even think of it. Maybe let the dog piss on it though:)

25. Second this suggestion - please take note
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 08:46 PM by TornadoTN
She needs to file a complaint - even if it seems minor.

I was managing a local campaign for Sheriff and his signs were getting stolen all over the county. We filed a complaint with the police and they were actually very helpful, even though their boss at that time was opponent of the guy I worked for. Don't expect immediate results, but they will increase patrols around the area and will take note of any large quantity of the signs being spotted. It will also give you a record if anything else should happen around the property.

I hope this doesn't discourage people from putting signs up in their yard as its merely an exercise in free speech and expression. But I guess that's the difference between Democrats and Republicans - we respect the right to display who you support on your own property, as stupid as it may seem.

31. Filing a complaint was my first thought, too.
Knowing her, she'd be afraid of alienating the neighbors. Plus, she works for the state and she is afraid of losing her job. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'll run it by her over the weekend when I talk to her. I guess, in my mind, her family's safety trumps her freedom of speech.

Frankly, even our founding fathers would shoot these people and DID.

she saw spit on it - just in case.

If she feels uncomfortable, she should probably take it down. She can always make calls from her computer or
some other sort of volunteer work. Geez, the lengths some people will go to are amazing aren't they? For what?

32. Bullies get confirmation when their stupidity gets a reaction, my Obama sign was
sliced into and painted before our primaries. I was outraged at first and then I got nervous, this was the second thing in 2 days that happened with my sign (the day before it had been pulled out of the yard and thrown up by my door). I thought the next thing might be even worse and involve my kids, then I got mad again. I'm just tired of these bullies and their hate, I decided to fight for my right to have what I wanted in my yard. I called the cops to let them know what had happened and got a Democratic cop in a really red county. He took down the info, said to put a 'No Trespassing' sign somewhere where it can be seen from the road and call them if anything else happened. My daughter and I went out and cleaned off the paint and taped the rip. That clean-up lesson with her was the second best thing that I did in the primary (after shaking Obama's hand).

Tell your sister to Never Give Up, keep her eyes open to her surroundings and wonder if that bully who mails his hate is really a wimp.

44. How do you figure?
Typically campaign signs are rather close to the road.

If they're not blocking line of sight around corners for car traffic, being "too close" isn't an issue.

37. Lots of prejudice around.
Of course if your sister would have confronted the spitter he would have said it had nothing to do with Obama being black. It's hard to believe spitting on a yard sign would make someone feel good about themselves. I put him in the same group that posts here about pissing on someone's grave. Why on earth would someone do that to any grave?
