Obama and FISA - Please take a moment to send the campaign your thoughts.
http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/contact2

Tell him to stand up and take a firm position opposing retroactive telecom immunity.

Keep it short and sweet. Here's my message:

Dear Senator Obama,

As a constitutional law professor, you know the danger to the Fourth Amendment, among other things, this current "compromise" FISA bill poses. Please stand firmly and publicly in opposition to this bill. Hopefully, you can use your skills to persuade some of your colleagues to stop the capitulation and get to the bottom of Bush's illegal warrantless wiretapping program. Your leadership on this issue would truly be change we can believe in.

Thank you,

Name

4. He hasn't been silent. He is opposed to immunity.
I would like him to find 40 Senators to stall this bill from passing. It's a long-shot, but he would really be taking a tremendous stand if he killed this bill.

6. I'm sending the campaign my time and money.
If you aren't doing the same then I hope you enjoy President McCain.

9. What a coincidence, so have I. But my voice as a citizen is important as well as my cash.
I have worked very hard to help elect Sen. Obama President in many states including my home state of Illinois, along with Wisconsin, Texas, and http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Tatiana/32">Indiana.

What I hope to enjoy is not President McCain, but a President Obama who is responsive to the needs of the American people and who defends the Constitution, including the Fourth Amendement.

Indpendent, critical thinking is funny that way...

11. That's nice.
It would be a shame if you were another heckler on the sidelines who tells Obama what stand to take while not helping the campaign.

What do your independent, critical thinking skills make of this part of Obama's statement?

"It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses."

12. It's a piece of shit even without the immunity
and grants even more illegal spying power to the feds and do you really think the immunity clause going away? I don't.

But if it's not, he still supports the compromise.

And as such, I think he should hear (along with the other Dems) how the citizenry feels about this compromise.

So I support the compromise, but do so with a firm pledge that as President, I will carefully monitor the program, review the report by the Inspectors General, and work with the Congress to take any additional steps I deem necessary to protect the lives – and the liberty – of the American people.

I'm not sure whether political expediency or simply doing the right thing will yield the best results. I fully understand the position Sen. Obama is in and I still wholeheartedly support his candidacy, but I really think he missed a golden opportunity to turn this issue against the Republicans.

Honestly, this bill should never have been brought to the floor. I hope he can kill this bill or get an amendment passed that strips the retroactive immunity. But even if he isn't able to accomplish those things, he still supports the compromise. I hope he proves me wrong.

17. That sounds eerily familiar to the claptrap surrounding the IWR.
"I will do my best to make sure the president doesn't start the war I'm authorizing him to start." Check.

How does harping on this help?

this issue.
