Rendell: Obama hasn't changed his mind on telecom immunity

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Rendell_Obama_hasnt_changed_his_mind_0629.html

Obama firmly believes in his support of the recent FISA bill that would grant retroactive immunity for telecommunication companies that might have broken the law, Gov. Ed Rendell said on Fox News Sunday.

In a video available below, Rendell added that the bill was worth defending as a "huge victory for individual rights" because it mandated court supervision of wiretaps.

"He has pledged later on in the Senate to try to strip the immunity position," Rendell said.

Senator Obama issued a statement defending his decision as a "compromise" soon after Congress passed the measure.

“Under this compromise legislation, an important tool in the fight against terrorism will continue, but the President's illegal program of warrantless surveillance will be over," Obama said in the statement.

"It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses."

2. Once again, the illegal wiretapping began BEFORE 9/11 and had NOTHING
to do with what these fuckers call terrorism.

3. Right...
"It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses."

Yeah, good luck with that, let us know how it works out...

4. That seems clear enough to me; let the bill proceed in order to re-establish the review of the
FISA warrants and try coalition building to get the immunity stripped out of it in the next stage of the legislative process.

6. Thank you. It should be clear to everyone,
but there are more people here who would rather whine and cry that they aren't getting their way rather than try to actually do something constructive.

DU is full of people with Munchausen's Syndrome.

7. Obama needs to hear from us on this. We MUST take our role as responsible citizens.
And, yes, a donation does amplify your voice. That's a reality of the situaiton we are in.

8. Senator Obama issued a statement defending his decision as a "compromise"
"Compromise" must be the new way of saying "capitulation"

He says he'll work to remove the provision. There were some Senators who were already working to remove it, such as Dodd. Wyden, and Feingold, but Obama wasn't standing amongst them.
