Whispers of Webb as V.P. heard at Senate

Sen. Jim Webb has a new nickname: Mr. Vice President.

It's what Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) was overheard calling the Virginia democrat as he stood up to deliver a speech on the war spending bill on the floor of congress Thursday night, according Roll Call's gossip column.

Webb, with his swing-state location and military roots, is thought to be one of the top contenders for the position. But McCaskill's name has also come up, leading Roll Call to wonder if the teasing was an inside joke "among Senators who've been fielding will-you-or-won't-you questions about their aspirations to be Obama's number two."

1. That's too bad
We need all our Dem senators.

Besides... if they think CLARK talks off the cuff, what 'til they get a load of Webb!

3. And then there's this from TNR:
http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/06/30/shout-out-to-jim-webb-in-obama-s-missouri-speech.aspx

Shout-Out to Jim Webb in Obama's Missouri Speech?

Obama's good, though not great, patriotism speech today in Independence, Missouri, contained two interesting lines: an aside about the "wrenching poverty ... of the hills of Appalachia" and a forceful condemnation of how '60s "counterculture" types refused to honor Vietnam veterans when they came home, which, Obama said, "remains a national shame to this day." Both are among Webb's very biggest pet causes -- the enduring stain created by our mistreatment of Vietnam vets is a political obsession that's especially unique to him.

4. I doubt it
The guy seems to be too independent for his own good.

5. Off the reservation choices: Wright and Confederacy sympathizers
I like it equal opportunity offenders bound in common objective: love, union, and peace forged through the perils of historical significance.

Why not go with Joe Biden?

He doesn't necessarily hold his tongue either.

Why not Wes Clark?

He has shown his ability to be impolitic with an aplomb I have not witnessed recently.

6. I doubt it
Webb supports off shore drilling and Obama doesn't plus Webb speaks before he thinks.

7. Please, NO.
The last thing we need is a former Republican in charge if anything happens to Obama. Thumbs down to him AND Wesley Clark who has only been a Democrat for five years.

9. Why not Clark? I am not sure about Webb
I like Clark because he complements Obama in a National ticket. And I think that the RW machine will be sputtering if Clark is named VP

10. I seem to recall that Webb was so upset about Clinton getting elected that
he wanted to move his family to Australia - often seen as a "fatherland" for right wingers. Anyone else recall this? How would that look on his dossier?
