Obama Holds Commanding Lead Over Keyes, Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV Poll
Obama Holds Commanding Lead Over Keyes, Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV Poll

CHICAGO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Barack Obama has opened an even bigger lead over Alan Keyes than he had over Jim Ryan, according to the latest Chicago Tribune/WGN poll. Complete poll results appear in the Sunday, August 22, edition of the Chicago Tribune and online at http://chicagotribune.com .

The poll, conducted August 13-16, shows Obama with a 41 percent lead over Keyes. Obama sweeps all necessary constituencies by large margins, including African-American voters by 93 percent to 3 percent. Moreover, 51 percent of Illinois voters disapprove of the selection by Republican Party leaders of Alan Keyes as the candidate for senate.

Conservative Republican leaders said they recruited Keyes to enter the race because Obama was "out of the mainstream" with Illinois voters. But Obama leads among Moderates 76 percent to 10 percent and wins a good share of fairly conservative voters -- 49 percent.

The poll is based on 700 telephone interviews of Illinois registered voters likely to vote in the November general election. It was conducted August 13-16; the potential margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

2. I saw Obama in Springfield this week
at the Illinois state fair. The man is a rock star. There's far more excitement for him than anyone including Durbin, who is usually the most popular Democrat in downstate.

3. This shows you how freakin' "out of the mainstream" the
fucking conservative republican party is in Illinois and I might add elsewhere.

5. Wow, Keyes started campaigning, Obama picked up 2 points!
He was leading by 39 points before Keyes even opened up his mouth.

Keyes looks to be somewhere around five points lower than Ryan was the day before he pulled out of the race.

9. Numbers to be announced on Sunday: Obama 65, Keyes 24
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 10:42 PM by Walt Starr
Keyes dropped four points after opening his big mouth. He's polling six points behind where the scandal ridden pervert, Jack Ryan, polled at the day before he dropped out of the race.

17. What were the numbers
you were saying he got in his disasterous MD senate race?

I hope that SOB gets under 20% of the vote. That would be great.

10. Can't wait
for Obama to be in the senate. The senate needs someone like him.

This race is good for entertainment value. We should thank Keyes for enetering the race and making this such a riot.

Even if Obama wasn't great such a great candidate, Keyes would still be losing. He's awfully good at that.

BTW has Obama even responded to any of the ridiculous things Keyes says?

12. I doubt it
If he did, he might say...

"Well it's a good thing I'm going to be senator and lower prescription-drug costs, because that man needs a LOT of riddalin."

16. Yes he has
But he's been keeping aloof at this point. He remarked that Keyes is talking about issues that IL people (people outside the nutty 28% of the population) don't care about. People care about issues like ethnol use, O'Hare expansion, and downstate manufacturing jobs.

Plus, apparently Keyes's big mouth made him look like more of a moron just recently. He said, when he was running for president, that we should abolish the U.S. Department of Agriculture - a big no-no in the farm parts of IL, which is most of down and west state. He's since said he's for the Dep. of Agri, but it makes him look like an idiot and a... you guessed it, flip-flopper.

This is like watching the perfect train wreak.

18. God, do I want Obama's lead to get bigger.
I'd love to see Obama win with at least 50 points. I want Barack Obama to humiliate that motherfucker Keyes. I want Obama to forever destroy Keyes' political ambitions. I want Keyes getting out of my state forever with his tail between his legs.
