McCain Collects His Social Security Checks. Why Shouldn’t We?

http://blog.aflcio.org/2008/07/18/mccain-collects-his-social-security-checks-why-shouldnt-we/

by Tula Connell, Jul 18, 2008

The Alliance for Retired Americans, the national organization that advocates for the rights of more than 3.5 million retirees and their families, asks a good question:

Will John McCain return the Social Security check he calls a “disgrace”?

Seems that even though he called Social Security a “disgrace,” the senator from Arizona doesn’t mind collecting his own monthly Social Security check, nearly $2,000 a month.

Says Edward Coyle, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans:

Retirees are puzzled by today’s media accounts that Senator John McCain received Social Security benefits of $23,157 in Social Security in 2007, an average of $1,929.75 each month.

America’s seniors deserve straight talk. Sen. McCain, now that you have said that Social Security is a disgrace, will you now mark “RETURN TO SENDER” on your check?

2. AND he collects

approximately $50,000 per year from the Navy as a 100% disabled veteran. When he leaves the senate he'll collect an additional full pension equal to his salary. Did he ever hear of a 'dollar a year' man?

8. Not quite the case
he draws about $50,000 from the Navy as a retired Captain (06) with 26 or so years service. He would get this regardless of physical condition. At seperation from the Navy he was determined to be 100% disabled by what ever criteria that the Navy used at that time. That determination means that that $50,000 will be tax free. I do not know this for a fact, but part of that $50,000 may be $2000 a month from the Social Security Administration.
I draw about $38,000 retirement from the Navy. When I start to draw Social Security in a couple of years, my military retirement will be offset
by the amount of my monthly Social Security. I will get the same $38,000 per year, but part of that figure will be from the SSA. I don't know if because of the disability rating that McCain's retirement is offset by his SS.

3. MASS EMAILS AND PHONECALLS TO MASS MEDIA SOURCES, PLEASE!
That's the only way they will cover this kind of thing. It truly is. They need to be badgered constantly until EVERYONE knows that McCain is sponging off of the state. Hypocritical bum.

5. McSame is a hypocrite
One one side telling us that the SS system is a "disgrace," and on the other side reaping its benefits. If only the media were paying attention.

7. Yep
Naval pension, senate salary, billionaire wife and if the skies fell in and he got to the WH, he'd add that salary to his haul too.
