1. I'm not so sure that Alaska is solidly McCain. |
|
He's not a very popular person up here and came in last in the Republican "presidential preference poll" in February. That being said, I'm not sure Alaskans completely trust Obama either, so it's hard telling which way the state will go.
It's a good possibility that the Dems will pick up the Senate and House seats, though.

2. If they can't manage it this year, they probably never will |

The only state I can think of where Republican representatives have messed up worse is in Idaho, with Larry Craig- but old widestance isn't running.

but Don Young is toast. I will be extremely surprised if he even makes it out of the primary. Then it will be a toss-up in the general. We have two other Republican candidates and two Democratic candidates fighting this one out, but any one of them would be far superior to Young, even the Republicans.

6. I strongly disagree... |
|
The bulk of McCain's conservative christian voting base doesn't not consider Mormonism a religion at all -- my conservative christian mother considers them a cult, something that I find deeply ironic, BTW. But taking Mittens as his running mate will further alienate this voting bloc. Needless to say, I strongly endorse McCain's choosing Romney. I'd swap Nevada for Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, and Ohio any day.

Mormons militantly took over the caucuses. Just like the religious has done before. Enormous mormon population in NV

And while having Romney on the ticket will sew up Nevada, it's going to alienate conservative evangelicals in the rest of the country.

You guys are giving far too much weight to a VP. That's a typical tendency. When we're not even talking about his home state it's particularly bizarre.
I've lived in Nevada since the mid '80s and the outside view is always strange. Yucca Mountain is considered more of a factor than it is, potential terrorist strikes on the major casinos are not taken into account even though that fear impacts the vote, and now we're a Mormon state that can't wait to vote for Mitt Romney. Whatever.
John McCain is hardly popular here. Several years ago he tried to strip Nevada of legalized betting on college sports. He was obsessed for years and Harry Reid had to hang out in the senate shadows late into the night to make sure McCain didn't attach that bill to something obscure and unrelated. McCain is not a cinch regardless who he pegs at VP.
