1. He makes a lot of sense as a choice--is seen as knowledgable
about the economy, is from Michigan, already used to the national stage, can raise shitloads of money (Mormons), and is by now familiar and vetted. Nobody likes the guy, but that's OK, because McCain gets enough worship on his own.

2. He would be McCain's best choice
He was the one I was afraid the Republicans would nominate. He's be McCain's best choice.

But McCain won't do it. He doesn't like him, and I doubt he'd want someone who's so much more articulate than him as his VP. That also rules out Huckabee, of course.

7. I think the counter to Romney is either Hillary or Biden
You need someone that's extremely sharp with a bit of a nasty streak to deal with romney.

23. The old geographic logic still applies
Even though Bush didn't use it in selecting Cheney. Obama should go for a southerner or a westerner. He's already got NY and DE sewn up.

11. Afraid of Romney? Why?
That's like a football player being afraid of a D&D playing nerd put in front of him in the offensive line.

26. I play D&D
Or used to. One of my nerd friends is 6'10" and about 375+ and was a lineman in high school, but I take your point.

What's to be afraid of in Romney? He's smart, articulate and rich enough to give his failed primary campaign 45 million. He was the best looking of the Republican field (not saying much, of course), and he has presidential hair, which is everything. He's also got that massive ego and arrogance that really seems to motivate the Republican base. I thought he was a lot better nominee (i.e.: electable) for the Republicans than John "You kids get the hell off my lawn" McCain, who is old and does not have hair that threatens me.

22. I disagree. Romney will hurt McCain in the South.
Southern Baptist Republicans are likely to consider the fact that McCain is 72 and in poor health - and given that, they don't want somebody who they think is a cultist in the White House.

I think if McCain chooses Romney we'll see more Barr votes and swing states in the South than we are seeing now.

28. I hope you're right
I just figured that after they voted for a drunken, coke-snorting AWOL hypocrite twice, a Mormon wouldn't look so bad.

Still, if you're the sort who feels that way, then casting a vote for Barr and thereby putting Obama in the White House is pretty unthinkable. They pretty much vote for whoever their preachers tell them to vote for anyway.

3. McSame lacks charisma, youth, and executive experience so in that sense Mittens is a good choice.
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 12:45 PM by GreenPartyVoter
He won't bring in the conservative evangelical vote, though, and I am not sure how he plays in southern states. Huckabee could do well in those two areas, and he has charisma and executive experience as well. I could see him as a VP choice.

5. Yeah, I think that's who he'll pick.
a) it's not like he has a lot of better choices
b) that's who the bush people want (Jeb endorsed Romney in the primaries and GHWB sort of did). the public hates bush, but the family has a lot of GOP power.

9. He does have a better choice. If he were smart he'd pick Kay Bailey Hutchinson...
Many women voters, suburban "soccer moms," could be swayed. Perhaps disaffected Clinton voters angry that a woman didn't make it may favor that ticket. Hutchinson is from Texas, a well known conservative. A stepford wife.

The Repuke Establishment loves Mittens. I think he is an excellent choice for them!

Go look at the old Kennedy ads against Romney. They would still work today

13. I saw him being interviewed months ago and he looked like he
knew he was in the race. He had that cat that swallowed the canary look. He brushed off any talk of VP stuff. But he was up to something. And that from someone who had just dropped out of the race points in the direction of him at least being vetted. Just a guess on my part. I think everyone acknowledges he is on the short list.

16. He was the runner up
has executive experience, and the "reputation" of being a "moderate."

Not sure he's the person I would choose if I were advising McCain, but nevertheless, by the standards that most pundits judge by, he's the top pick.

I think there's a good chance he'll pick Romney, but it will hurt his chances in the South.

20. Romney
I think he Is the leading candiate. The Republicans think they can sell him as a moderate. And Is hoping he can help win Michigan. He would be attacking Obama 24/7 on the Economy. He could also
bring a large moman turnout In nevada to win there. However he could help push some republican nutjobs to Bob Barr, and a Good VP for us(maybe Biden) can point out his former Social Liberal views and how he used to say he wasn't with Regean and Bush.

Only problem is, McCain hates him. Which almost makes me hope he picks him. The strife would be amusing.

24. The GOP right now is in a sort of psychological disintegration.
They've let the fundies into their bedrooms and the springs have been a'squeakin' for some time now, and now the fundies won't leave.

In fact, they've moved in and demand control of the kitchen and the SUV and the bookshelf.

What fools the Republicans were to hop in the sack with these nutbags.

Now, some years down the road, Jim Dobson is a bigger name in GOP circles than John Danforth, who is also a minister, but not one of Dobson's "approved" sort of ministers, by which I mean those fundies who are truth-challenged, extremely manipulative, socially judgmental and hateful, complicit in regressive issues politics, and more than willing to make the ministry Jesus -- no matter one's position on it -- a tool of oppression for others.

In 2000 Cheney is asked to head Dubya's veep search team after Dubya's cheat job in Florida and Cheney chooses himself.

After the 9/11 headlines the entire team lies us into an unprovoked attack on a sovereign nation. They are still lying about it at this hour.

These people evidently will do anything at all. Anything. Anything that maintains their influence and their power and which bolsters their big-wallet donors and corporate pals.

Against that backdrop, Willard doesn't seem all that outrageous.

For progressives, he's a monstrous creepazoid, yes, but to Republicans, he's almost an improvement.
