Could one use a modem to robocall?
(This sunk like Bob Dole's penis in the Lounge.)

This could be one way to get the message out (e.g. Did you know that the SBV are lying?). And we know that everyone on DU has a computer.

For example, let's say each call took 60 sec. And let's say you could call for 10 hours a day. That's 600 households reached each day per computer. Now, let's say you get 10 people doing it. 6000 households a day. Now there are thousands of DUers in swing states.

1000 computers = 600,000 households per day.

2. Nothing illegal proposed.
Is it possible for a modem to dial and play anything other than:

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

3. Should be......I am familiar with the concept, but I never tried it.
But searching on war dialers should give you a start.

4. Guy did it to Falwell in 1980s
Xx ATARI MORALITY

A man in Georgia reportedly programmed his Atari 800 and modem to call the Jerry Falwell toll-free fund collection number every 38 seconds. Apparently he was attempting to prevent the Moral Majority from getting tax-free contributions which, the computerist contended in an interview with Cable News Network, is, itself, immoral.

Southern Bell/AT&T traced the offending calls and ordered the anti-Fawell Atarian to cease and desist, threatening to discontinue his telephone service. (Credit for this morsel of Atari trivia goes to the Jersey Atari Computer Group newsletter.)

Not sure how much trouble the authorities would create for such a perpetrator today. I'd suggest doing some more research on the legality/consequences before embarking on this course.

5. OK here is the answer
One needs a 'voice modem'. About $30-40. And special software, about $60. http://www.modemtools.com/ivr.htm

It's possible that you would have to pay extra for some sort of 'business' phone line instead of residential.

As to the legality, I can't imagine that it would be illegal. Political calls aren't even protected by 'Do not call lists'. Certainly, it would have to be under the umbrella of some organization that would file paperwork with the FEC.
