Poll: Obama's Lead Slips In Michigan
wwj.com

Southfield (WWJ) -- A new poll out today shows the presidential race in Michigan is too close to call. The Public Policy Polling survey of nearly 900 voters shows Barack Obama with a 46-percent to 43-percent lead over John McCain. But the poll's margin of error is three percent.

A release issued said most of the movement in the last month has been among white voters and Republicans. In June a poll showed Obama earning 19% of the GOP vote but that is now down to 9%. McCain has a turned a small disadvantage with white voters into a 50-40 lead.

The North Carolina-based polling company says the race could come down to independent voters. 20-percent of independents say they are undecided on who they'll vote for in November.

“Michigan is going to be a vital state this fall,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “If Barack Obama doesn’t win here, he’ll probably have to win three or four states that went Republican the last time around. If John McCain can’t take the state then he won’t be able to afford to lose more than one state that George W. Bush won in
2004."

1. It's probably too early to make any sense of the polls yet. However,
it sees to be shaping up as a very polarized election.

2. Evan Bayh or Joe Biden can really help here, IMO
Both have a certain appeal to white working voters, Bayh because he was an extremely popular governor of a Rust Belt state who can talk to Michigan voters about the economy...and Biden because of his tough-guy persona and blue-collar roots.

3. If McCain chooses Romney
Obama needs to camp out in Michigan. Because if McCain takes Michigan...it throws a monkey wrench in everything.

4. If Romney is GOP VP candidate, Dems NEED a VP candidate who...
Can talk to Michigan voters about the ecomony and who has a stellar economic record in a Rust Belt state.

Evan Bayh fits this profile perfectly.

10. I agree ...
I think with BO as close as he is in Indiana to start with, Bayh will bring it home ... Iowa is a very good bet to flip, and Bayh would not hurt there ... IMO, I think Bayh is more likely to help BO in Ohio than any other candidate, and he can't hurt with Michigan ...

People just are not understanding that Bayh can really amplify BO's effort to make a run at those states next to Illinois/Indiana ...

5. I believe Romney is greatly overrated in MI
Seriously. Romney will help in some states like Utah, Nevada, and Arizona, but will hurt in many states. I honestly don't think Romney will move the vote in MI more than 1, possibly 2 percentage points. As such, I hope McCain picks him.

9. I agree ...
I have always thought Michigan was going to be very tough for BO, and Romney might swing it BO's way ...

And, I DO think Romney is the best he can do ...

But, I think Romney will not help him at all in some other key states ... I think Romney is a drag in PA, I think he will not help in Ohio at all ...

13. I think Romney will help flip some states Obama is targeting
I also don't think MI will be tough for Obama. I think Romney will only come into play for states Obama is targeting, in Nevada. He'll also help in AZ, but that's McCain's home state. I think McCain will have to compete for AZ somewhat, but he'll still win it without someone like Romney. Adding Romney will be a huge anchor for him.

Pick McCain!

6. Much of Michigan is like a person who is traumatized...

The state is economically distressed more than any other state. Layoffs, hiring freezes and a general sense of economic fear pervade the state. You'd think that would make it a slam dunk for Obama--and I still think it should be. But recent polls have shown that half the people blame Bush and half the people blame Gov. Granholm. In other words, at a given moment half of the people may not blame the republicans for their plight--as crazy as that may sound.. A lot of people are pissed at Granholm and she seems the scapegoat for many--I worry that may hurt Obama... (Note: I like Granholm and think she has done a good job considering the circumstances)

Simply promising the jobs of the future is not going to cut it this fall. For every step forward that Granholm has taken to bring those future jobs--the state has slipped two back due to layoffs, downsizing, and hiring freezes.

Michigan is going to be a fight.

12. Rural Michigan is some of the most anti-Obama territory out there.
If it comes down to Michigan, it could very well be the only Kerry state Obama may lose. Obama needs to pour it on there with a new strategy to win.
