The power of Obama speaking to 10 times as many people as Johnny would be undeniable, but the media tools will spin the RNC convention as "Just as energetic" and "powerful" as the DNC.

When can we get last licks?

1. When can we get last licks?
I think November 4th might be a good time for those last licks.

3. They can spin all they want to,
but you can't make a funeral look like a party, particularly right after the public will have seen one hell of a party with the Democrats!

5. True, but I can see lots of opportunities to overcome that. Instead of house parties,
how about renting threatres for simulcasts of major rallies? Huge GOTV picnics/fairs? We don't even need the m$m to cover them, just the blogs and the word will get out.

The theater thing was discussed a few weeks ago here on DU and I hope someone in the Obama or DNC saw it--the coattail/local effect would be great too!

7. I really hope they do the theater thing.
I'm a delegate so I'm going to Denver regardless (lucky me :woohoo:) but I know many people who won't be able to go and I think that holding events in theaters would be a great way to get folks together to enjoy the festivities.

6. No way. Do you realize that McOld makes his announcement the same night as the NFL season opener?
Redskins vs Giants

Plus, the GOP convention starts Labor Day Weekend.

Usually, I'd think that having the later spot would be an advantage, but this time, I'm not sure.

14. Respectfully disagree.
Obama will raise the bar when he speaks on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. McCain will not be able to match that.

17. I am glad... for these reasons

1. Obama gets to give his address on the 45th anniversary of MLK's "Dream" speech.

2. The Democratic convention will be up against no major events in the world of sports or entertainment. John McCain will be giving his acceptance speech at the same time the NFL opener is on TV. Nobody will be watching McCain... EVERYONE will be watching Obama.

3. Since they are only a week apart.... The contrast between Obama on stage in front of 75,000 screaming Democrats versus McCain in front of 17,000 bored Republicans will be VERY VERY stark. After McCain speaks, all the talking heads will be spending their time contrasting it (negatively) with Obama's speech.

This is the perfect year to go a week earlier than the GOP.

Ask yourself this.... if you were a struggling musician, would you rather perform on stage BEFORE Bruce Springsteen or AFTER? If you were a struggling comic... would you rather open for Richard Prior or have HIM perform BEFORE you?

Think about it.

McCain is in a BAD position.... and he has to almost HOPE that most of America is watching the NFL opener.
