What Andrea Mitchell said tonight.
On Hardball this evening Andrea Mitchell said that McCain has deep and real contempt for Obama. That he talks about him in a condescending and contemptuous manner. She seemed shocked by it.

I think she has come to the conclusion in her own mind that McCain is a vile person. Something got to her after she got back from Europe. She has crossed over to another place and really seems to have had some kind of an epiphany. I remember listening to Arianna Huffington talk about what happened to her after standing around listening to republicans talk privately at one too many cocktail parties. Andrea Mitchell has this same tone in her voice now, she even looks different this week. I think she heard things and has been privy to things from the McCain campaign that she can not morally reconcile in her own mind.

2. I think it rankled Andrea to no end
that McCain stood up and lied through his teeth about something she had personal knowledge of - the aborted visit to wounded soldiers in Germany. She was there and understood exactly what the truth was. She couldn't fail to acknowledge that Grampy was pulling the whole attack out of his ass.

She also kind of shuddered when discussing the "Obama is the antichrist" web ad.

22. McCain tried made fools out of the press with the soldier visit
And again with the dollar ad / race card brouhaha.

Well, Andrea might be saying "Fool me once, shame on me. Won't get fooled again."

By the way, this could be a good meme to go straight at his real strength.

MCCAIN IS MAKING FOOLS OUT OF THE PRESS

That's the one thing (other than $ from the media corps.) that would make these big egos change their tune.

26. Bingo!
The favorability of his press coverage is going to decline as he tries to embarrass more of the press. No Repuke can resist the siren call of beating up the media, and the media may be less forgiving than in the past. You don't fuck over the people who brought you to the dance without consequences.

the truth of the matter was - and she couldn't tolerate the McCain camp's lies.

Good for her. Better late than never.

3. Thanks for that insight as I have been wondering what is going on with her because
she is not herself in her reporting and on the not visiting the troops in Germany I could tell she was or rather felt really strong that it was nothing but a lie what they were saying about Barack.

I didn't watch Hardball tonight because it is starting to get me ticked off on a lot of the reporting so will let you guys keep me up on what is happening on the tube shows as I am sick of the Scar boroughs, Gregorys, Buchanan's and what they are putting out.

I think you might be on to something here because she is singing a different tune right now anyway.

sorry that was me throwing up in my mouth just a little that I said that but it's the truth. I was watching hardball and trying not to destroy my nice LCD tv when to my surprise Andrea Mitchell called McCain out for the condescending, disrespectful disdain in how he talks about Obama.

Further she pointed out that this has been going on for some time, including McCain saying he would go with Obama to Iraq to "educate" him. She also predicted that this would continue and that this was similar to how George the elder treated Bill Clinton during the 92 campaign. Methinks that the media is losing its man-crush, or at least some of it, with regard to McCain.

Sorry this is short and I will try to find the video later. However I thought this was pretty important that someone finally called a duck a duck and saw McCain as being disrespectful etc. That will hurt McCain big time.

39. At the beginning of the trip she was tough on Obama
Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 11:39 AM by me b zola
She was pissed that the only media coverage in Iraq was through the military, and she whined quite a bit about that. So her turn around now is striking, because I can almost taste the bile as it rises in her throat now when she speaks about McCain.

I think that the flat out lies and dirty tricks that were coordinated between the McCain camp and the Pentagon left more than a bad taste in her mouth. Maybe she was able to see close up and personal the obstacles that Obama has to maneuver around just to be where he is now.

I also believe that it is for these reasons that Obama has handled this tough week the way that he has. The media is turning strongly against McCain and has seen for themselves the cards stacked against Obama. That this is an up-stream swim for Obama all the way--and just how amazing he is in dealing with it all.

11. my theory on what happened to Andrea
1. It wasn't just that she knew he was lying about visiting the troops in Germany, McCain was calling the press tools, as if they were being used by Obama. Mitchell had been on early in the visit PISSED because Obama DID NOT let the press in with him when he visited the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then, to be told by McCain, that Obama was using the press AND wounded troops was a step too far.

2. Paul O'Neill joined Obama (sort of). Maybe it was only for the economic summit but you don't do that if you don't support the guy. Remember Paul was disgusted by the ideology in the Bush admin, he trashed Cheney in his book. Paul is best friends (or at least good friends) with Alan. So Alan and Paul talk and think Obama could be the best one for the economy. And Alan and Andrea talk and say Obama might not be so bad. McCain is treating the economy just like Bush did and we know how far that got us.

27. Very good theory
McCain and the right wing did spend the better part of two weeks slamming the press for an alleged Obama bias. The press was actually in the tank for McCain. It should have bugged them to be falsely accused.

McCain's talking point about unfair media coverage was even repeated by the media itself. They went so far to promote McCain's lies that they were willing to falsely accuse themselves to go along.

A backlash would make sense.

In NBC's case, I suspect its parent company, General Electric, pressures the network to side with McCain. General Electric is in the business of building and supplying nuclear plants as well as making the nuclear fuel itself. McCain promises he'll build 45 new nuclear plants at a cost of $5 billion to $8 billion each. Obama doesn't promise any at all. McCain's plan would make GE the next Halliburton. On top of that, GE sells jet engines to the military. They are likely to sell far more under McCain than Obama.

I read the NBC blog, First Read, and find there that their correspondents have a very different take on what's going on than what is shown on NBC Nightly News. Is it possible the network news apparatus finally had enough and rebelled against the parent company? The last few nights, especially the last two, NBC's coverage went from devoted adherence to McCain's talking points to highly critical reports, even condemnation. This comes after the media collectively declared that this election would be a "referendum on Obama," meaning they planned not to scrutinize McCain at all.

33. For people not following your very intelligent reply Andrea Mitchell is married to
Alan Greenspan.

I think she was also very pissed that the anchors got the interviews and reporters like her did not.

Also people like Greenspan have heard the many stories from Republican Senators how McCain can lose his temper and not Presidential timber.

36. Let me advance another theory ...
IMO, the right wing increasingly started to throw Greenspan under the bus for our economic problems ... Fact is, he carried Bush' water by lowing interest rates as low as he did, and keeping them down ... Had he not done that, things would be A LOT worse right now ...

His thanks - he is becoming a scapegoat ...

Much like Scott McClelland and others who were active in proping this crew up, once they get away from it and the dust starts to settle, resentment starts to set in ...

IMO, IF Andrea Mitchell is moving away from being a right wing lapdog, it is because she resents the way they are treating her husband, after he was a good soldier for them ...

both of them said McCain is showing his outright contempt for Obama.

If you don't think that has racial overtones, You're more willing to give McCain the benefit of the doubt than I am.

(My Senator, Bob Bennett (R Utah), despises McCain with a passion. I'm sure he won't say it publicly but my husband works with Bennett and Bennett has told him how much he hates McCain. This was long before the election so it wasn't like Bennett was supporting Romeny at that point, although I'd guess he did vote Mitt in the primary here.

How the hell is he going to get anything out of Congress if he's president and ALL the senators hate him?)

My problem is when they sell their souls to the devil.

21. I noticed she started to report like a real journalist during the primaries
I noticed this then because Mitchell's past reporting history has been on a very right-ward slant, BUT during the primaries her reporting and analysis tended to be fair. During the primaries, on air, MSNBC took on a happy-go-lucky atmosphere with many of their personalities on air together. I thought that perhaps there was an Olbermann influence of looking at the GOP for what they are - Party, Power and Money of smear and fear first, and America second.

I can't see how how people could not be affected by what Olbermann reports nightly. He doesn't make the GOP-shit up. Couple that with witnessing history in the making (Obama+Europe), I can see how someone could have an epiphany.
