5. The purpose of CFR was to
get the money out of politics... correct? Does anyone feel like this succeeded even a little? I don't. So while they didn't manage to take the money (and therefore the potential for corruption out) they did manage to remove the best way for an individual or group to get out its message before an election (TV). Does anyone else's ass hurt, cause' we all got screwed.

6. Are you sure? I thought MoveOn was about to launch a new ad campaign?
Which of MoveOn's organizations will be launched the ad campaign? I know they have a Pac, a 527, and, I think, a 501?

8. the DNC
will still do ads. 12 days is a long time for MOVE ON. And tv isn't the only mechanism to communicate with voters. Direct Mail is just as effective, even moreso because it can be targeted better.

17. 527's defined by Center for Responsive Politics.
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 07:12 PM by flpoljunkie
http://www.opensecrets.org/527s/types.asp

527 Group – A tax-exempt group organized under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code to raise money for political activities including voter mobilization efforts, issue advocacy and the like. Currently, the FEC only requires a 527 group to file regular disclosure reports if it is a political party or political action committee (PAC) that engages in either activities expressly advocating the election or defeat of a federal candidate, or in electioneering communications. Otherwise, it must file either with the government of the state in which it is located or the Internal Revenue Service. Many 527s run by special interest groups raise unlimited "soft money," which they use for voter mobilization and certain types of issue advocacy, but not for efforts that expressly advocate the election or defeat of a federal candidate or amount to electioneering communications.

I think these groups can use hard money--limited to individual $5,000 contributions to PACS like Moveonpac.org--for running ads inside the 60 day window. Soft money may not be used for these ads.

18. So the ads will not stop, the money will just be filtered?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 07:21 PM by Democat
Instead of Bob Perry giving $500,000 to the Swift Vets, he can just give 500 people $1000 each to give to the group in their own name?

That sounds like it's not really going to make any difference.

The Republicans are crooks, they will always break the laws and ignore the rules. Our side will be the ones trying to play nice, watch.

These 527 groups are not the problem; it is the lies they spread, left largely unrefuted by the feckless media.
